Love Beyond the Grave: The Costume Fantasy Where a Ghost Lord and a General Share One Set of Senses

A guide to the Tencent Video costume fantasy Love Beyond the Grave: a ghost lord born without senses, a young general who shares them with her, the Jinjiang novel behind it, and why a record-setting sign-up count was followed by a more modest run.

Love Beyond the Grave: The Costume Fantasy Where a Ghost Lord and a General Share One Set of Senses

Why this one

Most costume fantasies pair a powerful immortal with a mortal who needs protecting. Love Beyond the Grave (白日提灯, Bai Ri Ti Deng) reverses the usual terms. He Simu (贺思慕), a ghost lord roughly 400 years old, is the strongest figure in the story, and according to the English-language review site Chasing Dramas, she was born without the five senses. Duan Xu (段胥), a young mortal general, is the person whose senses she ends up sharing. Chinese Wikipedia's synopsis describes the two as bound by fate through that shared sensation, and the show is built around what each does with it.

The series premiered on March 28, 2026, on Tencent Video and ran 40 episodes. It has finished. Plot points here stay at the level of the opening episodes. Coverage has centred on the gap between a very large pre-launch audience and a run that Chinese industry writers describe as short of a breakout.

The setup

He Simu rules wandering spirits and has lived long enough that the human world is mostly something she observes. In Chasing Dramas' account of the first episodes, she visits the mortal realm during a break from her duties and sets out to take the Sword of Breaking Illusions, a blade that belonged to her aunt and is now held by Duan Xu, the commander of the Tai Bai Army (太白军). Duan Xu is a general with a war to fight against northern invaders and a political rival at court, Fang Xianye (方先野), who is played by Gao Heyuan (高鹤元).

The central device is the connection between the two: what one feels, the other feels. Because He Simu has never had ordinary senses, the arrangement changes the rules for her differently than it does for him. Chasing Dramas notes that gaining human sensation costs her power, so the connection carries a price for her. The two spend the early episodes testing each other: according to Chinese Wikipedia's synopsis, she grows suspicious of him after finding a relic of a deceased friend on him.

Cast and crew

Qin Zhen (秦榛, credited as Zoe Qin on MyDramaList) directs; the Chinese business outlet 36Kr and the Huxiu column that reprints industry data both note she was chief director of Eternal Longing (长相思, Chang Xiang Si). The writing credit lists several screenwriters on Chinese Wikipedia, and the show was reported under the working title Mu Xu Ci (慕胥辞) before release. English titles differ between sources; Love Beyond the Grave is the one used by TMDB and MyDramaList. Spellings of the supporting characters also vary between sources.

The source novel

The show adapts the novel of the same title by Li Qingran (黎青燃), serialised on Jinjiang Literature City (晋江文学城, Jinjiang wenxuecheng), the platform where much Chinese web fiction aimed at women is published. Huxiu reports that the novel has more than 300,000 saves (shoucang, 收藏, "bookmarks") on the site. The book is the origin of the shared-senses premise, and the adaptation keeps it as the story's main engine.

Adaptation is where English-language viewers raise their first questions. The Chasing Dramas reviewer, who watched the first 15 episodes, says some of Duan Xu's habits, such as his constant smiling, are presented without the explanation the novel supplies, and suggests that viewers who have not read the book may find them puzzling. The same review also finds the production's handling of its female lead worth noting: He Simu is the most powerful being in the story and is not positioned as someone who needs rescuing, and women in authority are treated as ordinary.

Two leads: Dilraba Dilmurat and Chen Feiyu

The pairing is the pitch: the Chinese coverage leads with Dilraba Dilmurat and Chen Feiyu. The show gives them roles of unequal power, a ghost lord and a mortal general.

English-language responses to the pair are mostly favourable and mostly about screen chemistry. MyDramaList reviewers describe the chemistry as a strength, and one says the leads make it easy to forget they are acting. Chasing Dramas praises Dilraba Dilmurat's range, from He Simu's awkward early attempts to behave like a human to her authority as a ruler of spirits, and calls Chen Feiyu's work in episode 8 the strongest of his career so far. The same review is more mixed on him elsewhere: some emotional scenes read as flat to the reviewer. MyDramaList reviewers add that his character is developed less fully than hers, which fits the show's choice to centre He Simu.

Sign-ups versus the run

The commercial story is a contrast between expectation and result. 36Kr, citing industry coverage of the April costume-drama schedule, reports that the series reached 6.745 million reservations on Tencent Video before launch, which the article calls a platform record for the year. It then describes the show's reputation as falling short of that early attention.

The viewing data supports a more moderate reading. Using figures from the data firm Yunhe Shuju (云合数据, "Enlightent"), 36Kr reports that Love Beyond the Grave earned an S+ rating but reached a peak market share of 10.8%, while a competing Youku drama, Moonscale Chronicle (月鳞绮纪), peaked at 17.9% after its own premiere. A Huxiu column built on Yunhe's first-half 2026 report puts the show's peak Tencent Video heat index at 27,084, under the 30,000 level the column treats as the line for a hit, with average views per episode (counted over a 30-day window) below 15 million. The column places the show among launch-week spikes that peaked early and then declined.

These are industry measures, not audience polls. Chinese coverage describes the series as large rather than dominant.

Look and costume

Styling is the part of the show that most often comes up in coverage of He Simu. The Taiwanese edition of Marie Claire describes Dilraba Dilmurat's makeup for the role as a move toward a cooler, sharper look: a thin, light base, low-saturation nude tones around the eyes, soft arched brows, barely visible contouring and a muted nude-pink lip. The magazine describes the aim as a cool, distant air suited to a ghost lord.

Chasing Dramas adds that the computer-generated imagery blends well with the sets, and the reviewer singles out the spirit-realm scenes.

Where it stumbles

Overseas reviewers are consistent about two weaknesses. The Chasing Dramas reviewer lists continuity errors in editing, with props shifting or vanishing between cuts. MyDramaList reviewers say the middle of the series could have been tighter and mention a few loose ends. Reviewers also disagree about the ending: one MyDramaList review describes it as balancing bittersweet and satisfying, and a separate blog post calls it divisive for favouring character emotion over spectacle.

Where to watch

In China the series streams on Tencent Video. MyDramaList lists Tencent Video, WeTV and Viki, all on subscription, for viewers abroad. Some reports also mention Disney+ in certain regions, which could not be confirmed. Availability varies by region, so check WeTV and Viki first for your country.

What overseas viewers are saying

The English-language conversation sits mostly on MyDramaList and review blogs, and it leans positive: the chemistry and the effects draw the most praise, and pacing and the male lead's development draw the most criticism. The sample is self-selected: viewers who chose to write reviews.
