Thunder Chaser: The Anti-Drug Police Drama Built Around Three Rookies and a Veteran Captain
A guide to the Tencent Video anti-drug police drama Thunder Chaser as it airs: the squad captain played by Qin Hailu, the three young officers sent in under her, the veteran cast and how the staggered release works.

Why this one
Most modern Chinese dramas that reach overseas viewers are romances, workplace stories or family sagas. Thunder Chaser (雷霆令, Lei Ting Ling) is the other side of the modern slate: a police drama about a narcotics squad, with undercover work, chases and a captain who directs it all. It premiered on Tencent Video on September 29 and is still airing. The VIP finale is scheduled for October 17, while free viewers are on a slower track that runs into early November. This guide covers the opening setup, the cast and the release, and says nothing about what happens later.
Two things make it worth a look. The first is the structure: a veteran actress as squad captain and three young officers who have just joined her team, so the story is as much about a commander and her recruits as about the dealers. The second is the cast on the other side of the law, which includes Ray Lui (吕良伟), a Hong Kong screen veteran, and Xu Yajun (许亚军).
The setup
The story takes place in a city called Weicheng (卫城) in an unnamed northwestern province. Hong Kong outlet HK01's synopsis describes it as a crossroads of western China's transport routes and the biggest hub of the drug trade in the west. According to the official summary carried by the Changchun Daily (长春日报), a run of serious drug cases breaks out, and a young officer, Zhuang Yan (庄严), is transferred urgently into the narcotics squad. He and a colleague, Li Xiao (李潇), form a small team to chase a dealer named Wu Liang (吴亮). Their captain, Bai Hua (白桦), directs the operation.
The trail leads from Wu Liang to Longze Group (龙泽集团) and to the network's biggest name, Ma Jingrong (马景荣). A third young officer, Wei Kai (魏凯), works undercover among the criminals and passes on information. The title is also the name of an operation: in the first episode, as one fan recap has it, a joint international anti-drug action code-named "Thunder Chaser" is already under way, and the story steps back eight months.
It is an ensemble procedural. Episodes move between stakeouts, raids and interrogations, with some home life: in episode two, Bai Hua comes home to a husband who complains that she neglects the family, while their daughter clings to her.

Chinese reports name Liu Duanduan, Jin Han and Qin Hailu as the three leads, listed by the stroke count of their surnames, and give Xu Yajun and Ray Lui among the special appearances. The series was produced by Changying Era Media (长影时代传媒), directed by Lin Feng (林峰) and written by Lu Dong (路东). The Changchun Daily and Jilin.com give 34 episodes, and so do TMDB and the d-addicts database; one Hong Kong site says 36, so this guide uses 34.
Qin Hailu as the captain
Qin Hailu is the best-known name here among film and stage audiences. She won Best Actress at the Golden Horse Awards, the Taiwanese film awards, for Durian Durian (榴莲飘飘), directed by Fruit Chan (陈果). On stage she won an Outstanding Actress prize at the China Golden Lion Award for Drama in 2012 for Four Generations Under One Roof (四世同堂), and on television she took Best Supporting Actress at the Shanghai Television Festival for the 2014 adaptation of Mo Yan's Red Sorghum (红高粱).
Here she is the commander rather than the one running after suspects. In the opening episodes Bai Hua sidelines Zhuang Yan after a failed arrest, puts him on desk work, and hands back his field duties only when he persuades her. That friction between a cautious captain and an impatient recruit drives much of the early story. One r/CDrama viewer remarked that Qin always seems to play a police officer, a sign of how often she has worn a uniform on screen.
The three young officers
The three recruits split the work. Zhuang Yan, played by Jin Han, is the one chasing Wu Liang. Li Xiao, played by Liu Duanduan, shadows suspects and plants listening devices. Wei Kai, played by Qi Hang, goes in among the dealers.
Overseas viewers know Jin Han from period and romance dramas. He first drew attention as a villain in The Princess Weiyoung (锦绣未央) in 2016 and again in Princess Agents (楚乔传) in 2017, and he played a special agent turned CEO opposite Zhao Liying (赵丽颖) in Our Glamorous Time (你和我的倾城时光) in 2018, according to English Wikipedia. A police uniform is a different register. The r/CDrama first-impressions thread has one reaction: a viewer who dropped the show after episode one wrote that the male lead "comes across as a rookie", while calling Liu Duanduan "a very good actor". It is one opinion, and the character is meant to be new to the squad.
Veterans on the other side
The list of special appearances is a gathering of established screen figures. Ray Lui, born in Saigon, is best known in Hong Kong for the 1980 TVB series The Bund (上海滩) and the 1991 gangster film To Be Number One (跛豪). d-addicts and HK01's own text list him as Long Zhiyuan. Xu Yajun plays Ma Jingrong, and Wang Longzheng plays Li Qiang. Sources differ on who sits at the top of the drug network: the official summary names Ma Jingrong as the biggest kingpin, while HK01's synopsis names Long Zhiyuan. How the two relate is something the show has to answer.
How the release works
Tencent Video split the release into tiers, each at noon China time. VIP subscribers got six episodes on September 29, two a day through October 9, and one a day from October 10 to 17. Free viewers got two episodes on October 6, then one a day through November 7. These dates come from the schedule that r/CDrama users posted from the show's promotional image and from Chinese tracking sites. The official Weibo account's calendar is the original, and we could not open it. By that schedule, a VIP viewer is on episode 33 as of October 16 and a free viewer around episode 12.
We found no official heat figures or ratings for the show, so we report none.
What overseas viewers are saying
The r/CDrama first-impressions masterpost had only a handful of comments by October 16, so there is little to summarise. What is there is lukewarm: one viewer dropped it after episode one over the male lead. The earlier trailer thread shows more interest in the show's long wait. One commenter said they had not expected it to ever air, another that it had been shelved for a while, a third that it was a 2020 drama. These are viewers' remarks, and we did not find a production statement on when it was filmed.
A note on the genre
Chinese official coverage presents the series as a tribute to anti-drug police. A Jilin.com report on the premiere said it shows China's resolve to crack down on drug crime. If you watch it for the genre, expect a story told from the squad's side, with the police's work at the centre.
Where to watch
In China the series airs exclusively on Tencent Video. For overseas viewers, the tracking site Zuiai.tv lists WeTV, Tencent's international app, and the r/CDrama masterpost links Tencent's trailer. Availability varies by region, so check WeTV in your country, and whether the VIP and free tiers are split there as they are in China.
