The Vanishing Beauty Finale: Why Viewers Call It Satisfying
The Vanishing Beauty ended its 28-episode run on October 20, and the finale trended on Weibo as "so satisfying." Here is how the two wives finish the fight, and why not every viewer was won over.
Spoilers for the final episodes of The Vanishing Beauty (Meiren Yu, 美人余) follow.
The Vanishing Beauty wrapped its 28-episode run on October 20, when Tencent Video members could unlock the last episodes early through a paid "finale preview" pack. Dragon TV, which airs it nightly at 7:30 p.m., is still mid-season. That evening the hashtag "The Vanishing Beauty finale is so satisfying" climbed to No. 5 on Weibo's trending list.
Signed, but not settled
In Episode 24, Yu Meng (Li Yitong) finally signs the divorce papers with her husband Di Liren (Qiao Zhenyu), takes off her ring and walks out. The accounting is not finished. Di gets an accomplice, Uncle Sun, to set a fire meant to look like an accident; Yu Meng and her mother are trapped, and Harry, Di's son, runs in after them and is badly burned. His mother, Lu Hui (Wang Jiajia), Di's first wife, bars Di from the hospital room: "If you take one more step into this room, I'll take you down with me."
Lu Hui also begins to suspect that Di had a hand in her father's death. The two wives, who opened their alliance with an exchange of slaps across a café table around Episode 17, finish the fight together.
What viewers said
Danmaku (on-screen comments) on the final episode ran to nearly 4,700. One of the most liked read, "Now that he's in Lu Hui's hands, I can relax." The line repeated most often, 424 times, was "Everything that happens works in my favor."
Not everyone was won over. Douban still had no rating at midnight, and the first post-finale reviews split: some called the ending neat and "satisfying," others said the last episodes dragged.
