About the drama
Most monster-of-the-week fantasies treat the monster as the problem. Fangs of Fortune (大梦归离, Da Meng Gui Li) starts from the opposite premise: the most dangerous demon walks into the government office and volunteers. A creature hunting its own kind beside the people it once threatened is the hook, and it gives the series most of its character comedy.
It is a mystery show as much as a fantasy one. Hangzhou's newspaper Metropolitan Express, comparing it with two other fantasy dramas airing that month, said it leans more toward case investigation, with cases that touch on social questions. Its verdict was split. Viewers praised the strange, eerie world and the good looks of the cast and costumes, while others found the delivery slow and affected, with too many slow-motion shots. The paper reported a Douban score of 5.0 mid-run.

The setting is the Zhenyuan era (贞元). The goddess Bai Ze (白泽), who governed both the human and demon realms, has died unexpectedly, and the Bai Ze Order, the token of her authority, is missing. Without it, beasts run loose in the human world and bloody killings multiply.
Into this walks Zhu Yan (朱厌), the head of all demons, who has taken human form as Zhao Yuanzhou (赵远舟, played by Hou Minghao, 侯明昊). He "surrenders" and offers to help the court form a demon-hunting bureau. Wen Xiao (文潇, Chen Duling, 陈都灵) joins with suspicion of him. With her are her childhood friend Zhuo Yichen (卓翼宸, Tian Jiarui, 田嘉瑞), skilled at investigation and swordwork, the cool archer Pei Sijing (裴思婧, Cheng Xiao, 程潇), and the gifted but timid child doctor Bai Jiu (白玖, Lin Ziye, 林子烨). The beasts of the Classic of Mountains and Seas appear before them one by one, and as the cases mount, the team starts to see a cruel truth behind the attacks.
The Classic of Mountains and Seas (山海经, Shan Hai Jing) is an ancient Chinese compendium of geography, myths and strange beasts. Beijing News describes the series as drawn from it, and its demon characters are taken from the book's creatures.
Fangs of Fortune premiered on iQIYI in late October 2024 and ran 34 episodes, finishing in mid-November. Beijing News reported its first teaser in April 2024, with the official line from the series' Weibo account: "Hot-blooded youth, sacrificing themselves for a dream; the great dream parts, but the heart remembers."
