About the drama

My Boss (你也有今天, Ni Ye You Jin Tian, "so you have your day too") is a workplace romance that spends as much time on the work as on the romance. The heroine is a cheerful new lawyer, the hero is the firm's sharp-tongued founder, and the cases between them are family-law disputes: property split between couples who lived together, divorce settlements, inheritance fights among children.

Director Chen Mingzhang (陈铭章) told Beijing News he wanted an idol drama "adults can watch", with tighter story logic, and described his approach as "organic" sweetness: instead of the couple feeding each other pizza to swelling music, he has the hero struggle to lift the slice on their first date until she leans in and takes a bite herself. Romance, he said, is two people each taking one step.

Cheng Yao (成瑶, played by Zhang Ruonan, 章若楠) dreams of being a lawyer and lands a job at a top firm. When she moves to a flat near the office, the landlord has let the same flat twice, and she ends up in a quarrel with the other tenant, who turns out to be her new boss, Qian Heng (钱恒, played by Chen Xingxu, 陈星旭). He is the founder of Junheng Law Firm (君恒律所) in the city of Jiangcheng (江城), known as a gold-medal litigator and for a venomous tongue.

Qian Heng assumes she got in through connections, and puts her through brutal training meant to make her quit. She takes it as luck and works harder, and her results change his mind. Around them are the firm's partner Wu Jun (吴君, Li Junxian, 李俊贤), who has been carrying a torch for Cheng Yao's older sister Cheng Xi (成惜, Chen Xiaoyun, 陈小纭), a public-interest lawyer.

Two threads run through the series. One is Cheng Yao's growth from a lawyer who follows her clients' feelings into one who understands why courts insist on procedure. The other is the way the leads change each other: Qian Heng, by the director's account, begins as an unreachable boss figure and softens.

The series is set in a contemporary Chinese city and is adapted from the web novel of the same title by Ye Feiran (叶斐然) on Jinjiang Literature City, produced by Linmon Pictures (柠萌影视) with Youku. Li Jingling (李晶凌) wrote the script.

Chen Mingzhang is known for idol dramas including Wang Zi Bian Qing Wa (王子变青蛙, "the prince turns into a frog") and Ming Zhong Zhu Ding Wo Ai Ni (命中注定我爱你, "fated to love you"), and has said this is his first in over a decade with leads this young.

In January 2024, as the show aired, Zhang Ruonan said online viewers called Cheng Yao a bit naive, and that she worked in extra comic touches to make the character likable.
