About the drama

Rosefinch (朱雀堂, Zhu Que Tang, "Vermilion Bird Hall") is a murder mystery made as a short-form drama that tries to look and feel like a long one. It premiered on iQIYI and Tencent Video on July 4, 2025, ran 30 episodes, and is finished. Beijing Daily reported a total investment of about 40 million yuan, large for the format, along with film-grade costumes, props and ultra-HD shooting, and said viewers called it "not like a short drama" and praised its "long-drama feel."

It stars actors known from long dramas, among them Wan Qian (万茜), whom HK01 introduces as a Golden Horse Award winner for best supporting actress.

It is 1929 in Shanghai. A double murder is found in a wall closet in an alley in Zhabei (闸北), and it turns out to be the start of a run of killings of dancers. The victims are said to have been offered up to powerful men, and the trail leads to the city's most lavish dance hall, the Zhu Que Tang.

Three people are pulled together. Xia Mo (夏漠, Qin Junjie 秦俊杰) is a forensic doctor. Tang Zhenyun (唐震云, Zhang Cheng 张呈) is a detective. Gao Ying (高英, Wan Qian 万茜) owns the hall and protects her dancers; at first she opposes the investigators, then cooperates with them. The case mixes crime-scene detail with folk-poison and talisman imagery.

The series is set in the early Republic of China, in the foreign-influenced Shanghai of 1929. It is adapted from a novel of the same name by the mystery writer Gui Ma Xing (鬼马星). The director is Xie Zhongdao (谢忠道), who was cinematography director on The Battle at Lake Changjin (长津湖).

The title names the dance hall. Zhuque (朱雀, "Vermilion Bird") is one of the four traditional guardian creatures of Chinese cosmology, the one that stands for the south; here the name belongs to the club, and tang (堂) means a hall.

On reception, Beijing Daily wrote on July 21, 2025 that the series had reached the top of the short-drama heat chart after launch and was opening the summer short-drama season. Hong Kong's HK01 reported in March 2026 that TVB Plus was airing it, three episodes at a time.
