About the drama
South Wind Knows (南风知我意, Nan Feng Zhi Wo Yi, "the south wind knows my heart") is a second-chance romance with an unusual workplace. Its two leads are not office workers or heirs first. One develops drugs, the other operates, and they meet while doing humanitarian medical work in under-served regions. That gives the early episodes a different texture from most modern love stories: field clinics, supplies, danger, and two people who learn to trust each other through work.
It is also a story about what happens after the intense part. The pair come close to confessing, then an accident sends one of them into a low point and he cuts off contact. The drama is mostly about the year afterwards and the slow, stubborn work of getting someone to open the door again. It ran 39 episodes on Youku, premiering on the evening of September 12, 2023.

Fu Yunshen (傅云深, played by Cheng Yi, 成毅) is a pharmaceutical researcher looking for natural medicines. Zhu Jiu (朱旧, Zhang Yuxi, 张予曦) is a surgeon who goes to under-developed areas on medical missions. They start out misunderstanding each other, then go through a life-and-death crisis together and fall for each other. Before either has said so plainly, an accident leaves Fu Yunshen at the lowest point of his life, and he severs his ties with Zhu Jiu.
A year later she returns as his family doctor. He is difficult and makes things hard for her, but Zhu Jiu answers with persistence, good humour and a refusal to leave. The story follows her effort to help him out of the dark place he has shut himself into, and the pasts both of them have to deal with before they can try again.
The drama is set in the present day and moves between Shanghai, home of the Fu family and their Lingtian Group (凌天集团), and the places where the medical missions take place.
It is adapted from the novel of the same name by Qi Wei (七微), who is also credited as a screenwriter alongside Shao Zi, Zhou Meng and Wang Yingfei. Li Ang (李昂) directed. Youku and Huanrui Century (欢瑞世纪) co-produced it, according to Beijing Youth Daily.
The series was shot between November 2020 and February 2021 and released more than two and a half years later, on Youku on September 12, 2023, running to October 31. Beijing Youth Daily's premiere-day report pointed to the "enemies to lovers" and "broken mirror made whole" set-ups as the draw, and the cast.
