Changsha is watched over by nine powerful families known as the Old Nine Gates. Zhang Qishan, head of the Nine Gates, is ordered to investigate a ghost train and the mystery of a secret mine. With his partner Qi Tiezui, he asks Er Yuehong, an opera star from a family of archaeologists, for help, but Er Yuehong has retired to care for his gravely ill wife, Ya Tou. To lure him back, the two travel north to the Xinyue Hotel to seek medicine for her, and there Zhang meets the owner's daughter, Yin Xinyue. Er Yuehong then finds that the mine's secret is tied to his own family's past, and to a Japanese scheme.
