柜姐

guìjiě · 'counter sister': a saleswoman at a luxury or cosmetics counter

Share card for this term

Guijie is the colloquial name for the young women who staff the counters of department stores and luxury boutiques, selling cosmetics, jewellery or handbags; jie (sister) is a friendly, informal way to address a young woman. The word carries a social picture: a job close to great wealth that pays little, where the saleswoman serves clients whose lives she can see but not reach. Urban dramas use it as shorthand for that gap. In Nothing But Thirty, Wang Manni is a guijie at a Shanghai luxury store.
