A shichen is a traditional Chinese 'double-hour', one of twelve periods of two hours that divided the day. Each had its own name, and a time of day was given by the shichen rather than by the clock. Period dramas use the unit when characters say how long they have left, and some build their structure on it. The Longest Day in Chang'an counts down twelve shichen.
