Share card for this term

Wokou is the Chinese term for the coastal raiders who attacked the Chinese and Korean coasts, literally 'Japanese bandits'. Raids on the southeast coast escalated through the 1540s and peaked in the 1550s, under the Jiajing Emperor. The raiding crews were in fact mixed, and many were Chinese smugglers and traders. Under the Power uses the attacks as part of its Ming-dynasty background.
