Zhengju means 'serious drama'. In costume drama it usually refers to lishi zhengju, historical drama that claims to follow real history, as opposed to palace romance, fantasy or fiction set in a vague past. The distinction matters because regulators and audiences hold zhengju to a stricter standard of accuracy. A piece on real dynasties and invented plots uses it to explain why shows relocate or merge historical figures.
