Zhiqing is short for zhishi qingnian, 'educated youth'. It refers to the urban middle-school and high-school graduates who were sent to work in the countryside, mainly from the late 1960s until the late 1970s. Many spent years or a decade away from their families, and the experience shaped a generation's memories and literature. A Lifelong Journey follows characters through that era and its aftermath.
