King of Comedy: The Drama That Borrowed Stephen Chow's Title and Moved the Film Set to a Fishing Village

A guide to the 24-episode iQIYI comedy King of Comedy, which borrows the name of Stephen Chow's 1999 film for a new story about a Fujian fishing village, with Yang Chaoyue, Jiang Long and a troupe of sketch comedians from iQIYI's comedy contest.

King of Comedy: The Drama That Borrowed Stephen Chow's Title and Moved the Film Set to a Fishing Village

Why this one

Most overseas readers will know the title before the show. King of Comedy (喜剧之王) is the name of a 1999 Hong Kong film by Stephen Chow (周星驰), and a series using it invites the obvious question: is this a remake? It is not. The drama keeps the title, a handful of jokes about the film and the idea that small people with big dreams deserve a stage. It drops the Hong Kong film lot and the extra's climb through the studios, and puts a new story in a fictional fishing village on the Fujian coast.

The result is a 24-episode village comedy about a demolition notice, a viral video and a rival village that steals its tourists. It premiered on October 6 on iQIYI (爱奇艺) and Migu Video (咪咕视频) and finished on October 14, so the whole run is available. It is also a showcase for a particular school of Chinese comedy: the sketch performers of iQIYI's Yi Nian Yi Du Xi Ju Da Sai (一年一度喜剧大赛, "the once-a-year comedy contest"), whom the production calls xi ren (喜人, "comedy people"). If you like ensemble comedy with a lot of cameo faces and don't need a faithful adaptation, this is the version to look at. If you want the film again, it is not that.

The setup

Shapu Village (沙浦村) is a fictional fishing village on the south-east coast. Its fish catch is shrinking, the young have left for the cities and a developer, Mr. Huang (黄总) of Ma Group (马氏集团), wants the land. Most villagers are ready to sign. A Zhen (阿珍, full name Chen Jiazhen, 陈嘉珍), the local beauty and an architecture graduate, and her brother Chen Jiahao (陈嘉豪) are among the few who refuse. They win seven days to prove that the village is worth more standing than demolished.

Their asset is the film itself. According to iQIYI's synopsis, the villagers' one boast is that the 1999 King of Comedy tried, and failed, to shoot there decades ago. A Zhen proposes to turn that near-miss into a tourism pitch, copying the neighbouring village of Chuanao (船澳村), and calls in help: Zhou Ke (周可), a "Hengpiao" (横漂, a would-be actor who drifts around the Hengdian film studios hoping for extra work) who has not made it in five years, and his older cousin and longtime partner Lin Ximei (林细妹).

The early episodes run on stunts. Zhou Ke stages a funeral for A Zhen after mistaking her for a ghost, then explains it to the angry villagers as content for a short-video account. An account that goes viral is then threatened with a ban for buying followers. A drunken moment brings in the tourists. As the platform's synopsis tells it, the plot later brings a copyright dispute and the rival village's imitation; along the way A Zhen and Zhou Ke move from irritation to something warmer. This guide stays with that frame and leaves the ending to the show.

The film, in brief

For readers who haven't seen it: the 1999 King of Comedy was directed by Lee Lik-chi and Stephen Chow himself. Chow plays an aspiring actor stuck in bit parts who takes his tiny roles with absurd seriousness, and falls for a nightclub hostess whom he coaches. It is a comedy with a bruised centre, often read as a version of Chow's own start as an extra. That is the spirit the television version claims to carry over: someone laughed at for taking small parts seriously.

The drama takes that idea in the other direction. The film asks whether a dreamer can become somebody. The village comedy asks what a community can hold on to when the economy moves on. It trades the studio for tourism, live-streamed fish balls and a land dispute, which is why viewers who came for the film's tone may find it a different animal.

Cast and crew

The platform's listing credits Jiang Long, Li Bingqiang (李炳强), Song Tianshuo (松天硕), Wang Jianhua and Zhang Kang (张亢) as directors. Peng Xu (彭旭), whose earlier credit is the Tencent Video martial-arts comedy Que Dao Men Chuan Qi (鹊刀门传奇), wrote it. According to the Fuding city media centre, iQIYI produced it with Wanda Film Media (万达影视传媒), Lize Pictures (丽泽影业) and Daxun Holdings (大迅控股集团).

Pre-premiere reports named a long list of guests: Huang Bo (黄渤), Yu Hewei (于和伟), Li Chengru (李诚儒), Li Chen (李晨), Ma Su (马苏), Han Tongsheng (韩童生), Wang Zhi (王智) and Li Chuan (李川), plus the bands Second Hand Rose (二手玫瑰) and Wutiaoren (五条人).

A sketch troupe by the sea

The show is best read as a reunion. Chinese reports tie Jiang Long, Zhang Chi, Jiang Shimeng and Song Muzi to that comedy contest and call the series a "team-building" project for its performers. Sketch comedy (xiaopin, 小品) has a particular rhythm: a premise, escalating misunderstanding, a quick payoff. A village of 24 episodes asks that rhythm to carry a plot.

Where it works, the plot is built from misunderstandings that each get a payoff. Episode 14 is a hotel set-piece: A Zhen and Zhou Ke share a room while her brother, who thinks he is catching them, hides in a wardrobe with the rival village's head, and the room's real occupants arrive. The fish ball stall, the fake sea monster that two schemers drag into a bay and the viral accounts are all gags that serve the village-rescue plot. A viewer who found the series repetitive after three episodes, as one r/CDrama commenter did, is describing the cost of that structure.

Playing with the film

The most fun for people who know the original is in how the drama talks back to it. The village's claim to fame is a failed shoot. A villager says he was the model for the film's hero, a claim iQIYI's synopsis for episode 3 gives him. The neighbouring village markets itself as the film's true home, and its head says the shoot used both villages, so Shapu's claim becomes a running dispute. Zhou Ke himself is an actor with an abandoned film of his own behind him.

It all comes together in the figure of Jiang Long, who plays Zhou Ke and is also the lead director, in what Sina reports is his first time directing. Zhou Ke dreams of directing after that abandoned film; Jiang Long, who rose through the contest, directs the show with four co-directors. The echo may be unintended, but it is there.

Yang Chaoyue in a comedian's show

Yang Chaoyue is the other draw. According to her English Wikipedia entry she finished third on the girl-group survival show Produce 101 and has since made a career of acting and variety shows, including the romantic comedy Midsummer Is Full of Love. A Zhen is a straight-faced, stubborn returnee in a show built around professional comedians, and the casting puts a newer comic actor next to specialists.

Release and status

The shoot began with an opening ceremony on December 2, 2024 in Fuding (福鼎), Fujian, about 75 days of shooting were planned, and the crew was still filming in the main village of Huangqi (黄岐村) in late January 2025, according to Fuding's municipal media centre. The registration filing in 2024 listed 30 episodes; the finished show has 24.

King of Comedy premiered on iQIYI and Migu Video on October 6 at noon China time with six episodes on opening day, according to the r/CDrama airing schedule, then released more episodes on the following days. TMDB lists the finale as episode 24, on October 14. The series is complete.

What overseas viewers are saying

There is little evidence from overseas so far. The r/CDrama first-impressions thread opened on October 6 had about a dozen comments by mid-October, and its tone is mild. One viewer said the first episode was "laugh aloud funny" but that by episode 3 it had become repetitive, and wished they had shown the main characters' videos in full. That is a handful of viewers, not a measure of reception.

Where to watch

In China the series streams on iQIYI and Migu Video, with membership tiers on iQIYI. The r/CDrama masterpost lists iQIYI's international site and iQIYI's YouTube channel for overseas viewers. Availability varies by region so check the iQIYI app in your country.
