Word of Honor: A Wuxia Road Story About a Man Who Left His Organization With Three Years to Live
A guide to the 2021 Youku wuxia series Word of Honor: a secret-organization chief who leaves at a deadly price, the Ghost Valley lord he meets on the road, and how a Priest novel's jianghu became the first two-male-lead drama of 2021.

Why this one
Most wuxia (武侠, "martial heroes") stories open with a young swordsman at the bottom of the ladder. Word of Honor (山河令, Shan He Ling) opens with a man who has already reached the top and has paid to leave. Zhou Zishu (周子舒), played by Zhang Zhehan (张哲瀚), led a secret organization called Tianchuang (天窗, "Window of Heaven"). To walk away from it he accepted seven nails driven into his own body, a price that, in Chinese Wikipedia's synopsis, leaves him about three years to live. On the road he meets Wen Kexing (温客行), played by Gong Jun (龚俊), lord of Ghost Valley (鬼谷, Gui Gu), a man with a revenge plan of his own.
The series is a road story through the jianghu (江湖, "rivers and lakes"), the loose world of sects, clans and wandering fighters in which wuxia takes place. It adapts a Priest novel into a classic-style martial-arts world, it carried two leads to prominence in China, and it was the first shuangnanzhu (双男主, "two male leads") drama of 2021, arriving in the shadow of The Untamed (陈情令).
Youku premiered it on February 22, 2021. It has finished: 36 episodes and a bonus episode. Plot points here stay at the level of the opening episodes.
The setup
Zhou Zishu has spent his career inside Tianchuang. According to the Chinese Wikipedia synopsis, he drove the nails into himself to be free of the organization, which leaves his senses fading and his fighting power greatly reduced. He drifts into the jianghu as a man near the end of his life. There he meets Wen Kexing, whom the English Wikipedia synopsis describes as the master of Ghost Valley, secretly planning revenge for the deaths of his parents.
The plot's engine is Liuli Armor (琉璃甲). China News Service describes five pieces of it, said to unlock a vault of martial arts manuals, and describes the hunt for them as bringing violence and suspicion to five major sects. Zhang Chengling (张成岭), the son of a sect leader, becomes Zhou Zishu's apprentice. Gu Xiang (顾湘), a member of Ghost Valley raised by Wen Kexing, belongs to the other side of the same conflict.

The credited directors are Cheng Zhichao (成志超), Ma Huagan (马华干) and Li Hongyu (李宏宇). Xiao Chu (小初) wrote the screenplay. Ciwen Media (慈文传媒) and Youku produced it, with filming at Hengdian World Studios (横店影视城) in Zhejiang from June to September 2020. The English title is the one used by TMDB, Netflix and Viki.
The novel and the jianghu
The source is Tian Ya Ke (天涯客, English title Faraway Wanderers) by Priest, a danmei (耽美, "addicted to beauty") novel, a genre of fiction centered on romantic relationships between men, published on the site Jinjiang Literature City (晋江文学城).
What the series builds is a wuxia world. China News Service's launch report describes a strong martial-arts flavor: designed fight sequences, themes of chivalry and righteousness, and promotional posters in an ink-wash style. The map of the story is the genre's classic one, with several sects, a feared valley outside the sects, and a prize that all of them are chasing.
One r/CDrama viewer reads the show as repeatedly blurring the line between the "righteous" sects and Ghost Valley, noting that some members of each belong on the other side.
Two leads and Gu Xiang
The pairing is the draw. Zhou Zishu is the one with a failing body and a past he is trying to leave. Wen Kexing is, in English Wikipedia's phrase, a complex and morally ambiguous master of Ghost Valley. The same entry says Gong Jun rose to prominence in 2021 through the role and calls the series his breakthrough. China's CBNData reported that brands treated the two leads as a package: its first-quarter 2021 star-influence ranking placed them on a "dark horse" list for endorsements, and brands answered their popularity with joint campaigns.
Among r/CDrama viewers the performances get warm comment. One wrote, "I liked the performances and the fights," while objecting to a late story turn. Another enjoyed Wen Kexing at his most unhinged, in a scene where even Ghost Valley's own ghosts back away from him. A third wrote, "I got really attached to Zhou Ye's Gu Xiang." Zhou Ye plays the lead in Spring of the Blade (一瓯春), the iQIYI and Youku revenge drama that premiered on September 17, 2026, and Gong Jun's later credits listed on English Wikipedia include The Flaming Heart (2021), The Legend of Anle (2022–2023) and Rising With the Wind (2023).
Where it sits after The Untamed
The Untamed ran on Tencent Video from June 27 to August 20, 2019. It has 50 episodes, stars Xiao Zhan (肖战) and Wang Yibo (王一博), and is adapted from the danmei novel Mo Dao Zu Shi (魔道祖师) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (墨香铜臭).
Word of Honor was the first two-male-lead drama of 2021. CBNData's first-quarter report says it did not repeat the scale of The Untamed, but it still became a "small hit" of the quarter. Chinese reports at the time cited a Douban score that opened at 8.1 and climbed to 8.6, carried by China News Service, and about 250,000 Douban ratings, from CBNData. These are 2021 figures.
Where to watch
In mainland China the series is no longer on Youku. In August 2021, after photographs from his trips to Japan drew criticism from Chinese state media and he apologized for lacking knowledge of the history, Chinese video platforms removed Zhang Zhehan's work, including Word of Honor.
Outside mainland China the drama stays on licensed services. Chinese Wikipedia lists Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Youku's YouTube channel, and English Wikipedia lists Viki as well. Netflix has a title page for the series, though its Canadian page says it is not available there. Viki's page lists 37 episodes, which counts the epilogue as an extra. Availability varies by region, so check Netflix and Viki in your country first.
One practical note from r/CDrama: the bonus episode is not on every service. One viewer said only Viki has it alongside the main episodes, and another had to find it on YouTube after finishing on Netflix.
What overseas viewers are saying
The most recent thread in r/CDrama's archive window is an Episode Talk post from early October 2026, in which a first-time viewer reacted to a late plot turn. It drew about 60 comments, five years after the premiere. This is one thread from recent weeks, not the 2021 conversation.
Viewers who had been through the same episode shared the reaction. One wrote, "This was my 2nd cdrama ever and it left a mark." Another wrote, "I do not regret watching and finishing this drama," while saying one late episode left a lingering feeling.
On Viki the series shows a 9.6 score from about 22,800 ratings at the time of writing.
