About the drama

Coroner's Diary (朝雪录, Zhao Xue Lu) is a case-of-the-week drama with a long fuse. Eight separate investigations each get their own arc, and all of them feed one larger revenge plot. The producer, Quan Haojin (全浩进), described the approach in two phrases: "investigate first, romance after" (先探案,后爱情) and "cases as the bones, romance as the soul" (探案为骨,言情为魂). The leads, he said, are not a couple for the sake of it but a pairing of minds, zhi xing lian (智性恋, "attraction of intellects").

The cases are the draw. The first, a "headless bride" (无头新娘) murder, sets the tone with an eerie crime scene, and the series keeps a brisk pace from there.

Qin Wan (秦莞, played by Li Landi, 李兰迪) is the daughter of the head of the Court of Judicial Review (大理寺, Dalisi, the court that reviewed serious criminal cases). Her family is ruined, and she takes up the work of a coroner (仵作, wuzuo), drawing on medical training as a disciple of Yaowang Valley (药王谷, "Medicine King Valley"). Her aim is to clear her father's name.

Her partner is Yan Chi (燕迟, played by Ao Ruipeng, 敖瑞鹏), the heir of Prince Rui and a young commander of the Shuoxi army. Between the cases, the story builds toward a conspiracy known as the "Prince Jin case" (晋王案), where the eight investigations converge.

The setting is an imperial court world of princes, ministers and a capital full of secrets. The series is adapted from the web novel Quan Chong Zhi Wuzuo Yi Fei (权宠之仵作医妃, "the favored coroner and healer-consort") by Bu Yue Qian Zhuang (步月浅妆), and was directed by Li Huizhu (李慧珠). It premiered on iQIYI on July 13, 2025, and ran 38 episodes.

The Beijing Daily (北京日报) reported on August 1, 2025, that the drama's heat index passed 10,000 on its eleventh day and that it became iQIYI's third title of the year to enter the platform's "Hall of Honor" (荣誉殿堂). The same report cited data from Huan Wang (欢网) giving it a viewer loyalty rate of 36.3%, the highest among historical dramas that premiered on iQIYI between May and July.

Reception was mixed. World Journal (世界日报) reported on July 28, 2025, that viewers praised the leads' looks, the detailed costumes and props, and the fast-moving case work, with its eerie music and lighting. Critics said the plot leans on formula, that the heroine's aura is too strong, and that she solves cases with convenient luck. One commenter put the biggest problem this way: apart from her, everyone else looks like a fool. Others were forgiving, saying the show is entertainment and need not be taken too seriously.
