About the drama

Crime dramas usually put the police on one side and the criminals on the other. In the Name of Justice (以法之名, Yi Fa Zhi Ming) asks a less comfortable question: what happens when the people who run the case are the problem? Its heroes are prosecutors, and the case they reopen is a mob prosecution that has already been through the system.

That makes it a procedural kind of suspense, driven by what the files and the people handling them reveal rather than by chases. Beijing News described it as the next major drama after In the Name of the People (人民的名义) in that line of rule-of-law storytelling.

In the province of Haidong (海东), prosecutors are reviewing the "Wanhai organized crime case" (万海黑社会性质组织案) in the city of Dongping (东平). As they go back through the file, they see that some of the officials who handled it bent the law for the benefit of others. Hong Liang (洪亮, played by Zhang Yi 张译), a prosecutor in the provincial procuratorate's eleventh department, and Zheng Yaping (郑雅萍, played by Jiang Xin 蒋欣), from the first department, lead the investigation.

Using a tip from a whistle-blower as their way in, they move against the criminal network and the officials who protected it. The drama treats this as two cases at once: the gang, and the "protective umbrella" (保护伞, baohusan) of insiders that kept it safe.

The series is set in a present-day Chinese province and is built around a real part of the system: the procuratorate's power to investigate crimes committed by judicial staff themselves. The Paper reported that the story rests on this statutory investigative function and on real investigative practice. Beijing News called the drama a "judicial ecosystem" story, where the camera stays inside the justice system rather than in the wider world of officialdom.

It has 36 episodes and was directed by Fu Dongyu (傅东育) and Zheng Shilong (郑世龙). It was produced by the Supreme People's Procuratorate's film and television center together with Youku, Damai Entertainment and other companies, and it began airing on the evening of June 24, 2025, on CCTV-8 and Youku at the same time.

Beijing News read the story as a shift from showing individual corrupt officials to asking who watches the watchers, and quoted the line that sums up the case, roughly "no real gang left out, no case padded with innocents" (是黑恶一个不漏,不是黑恶一个不凑).
