Light the Dark: Two Siblings, One Pipeline Explosion and a 12-Episode Mystery from China's 1990s Oil Country

A guide to the iQIYI period mystery Light the Dark as it airs: the siblings played by Chen Zheyuan and Jiang Xin, the late-1990s oil town behind the case, and why a 12-episode air-drop is worth a look.

Light the Dark: Two Siblings, One Pipeline Explosion and a 12-Episode Mystery from China's 1990s Oil Country

Why this one

Chinese mystery dramas usually build the story around a detective, a cold case or a romance between two leads. Light the Dark (把黑夜点燃, Ba Hei Ye Dian Ran) builds it around a brother and a sister. iQIYI put it online on October 15, 2026, at 6 p.m. with no promotional campaign, and it is a short one: 12 episodes, about 45 minutes each. As of October 16 five episodes have aired, and this guide covers only what viewers have seen so far.

The leads are Chen Zheyuan (陈哲远), best known to overseas viewers for the campus romance Hidden Love (偷偷藏不住), and Jiang Xin (蒋欣), the Hua Fei (华妃) of Empresses in the Palace (甄嬛传). They play siblings whose parents die in a gas-pipeline explosion, and the show is about the long, unwelcome work of finding out what really happened. It is set in the oil industry of the late 1990s, a milieu that few Chinese dramas have used.

The setup

The story runs on two timelines. In 1997, in a small town in southwest China called Wugang (雾港, "Fog Port"), the Chen family lives in housing supplied by the local petroleum danwei (单位, the state work unit that employed a worker and often housed the whole family). The father, Chen Fu (陈富), leads a pipeline construction project, the mother, Zhang Wenying (张文英), works at the petroleum design institute, and the older sister, Chen Ying (陈英), has an office job in the same system. The younger brother, Chen Shan (陈善), is expected to follow his parents into it.

Then a gas explosion kills them. Reports on the premise say the accident is ruled an operating error, but the siblings do not accept that. In the second timeline, in 2001, Chen Shan has become the head of a construction crew nicknamed "Brother Shan" and lives, in the official synopsis' phrase as translated on MyDramaList, like a ghost stuck in the past. A second blast reopens the case.

Reports on Chen Ying's job differ. The synopsis puts her in the archive room of a supply station, while the official character profile calls her an accountant at a petrochemical plant. She is a quiet, observant office worker either way. For what she and her brother find, and how the case unfolds, you will need to watch the show.

Cast and crew

Liu Xin (刘新) directs. His earlier work includes Hunting (猎冰). The writers are Dai Zhengyang (戴正阳), Liu Jing (刘晶), Zhang Xueli (张雪丽) and Zhao Shihui (赵诗卉). iQIYI produced it with Zhejiang Dongyang Fosun Pictures (浙江东阳复星影业). No source novel is credited. The full cast was announced when filming began in Chongqing on May 8, 2025, and the shoot wrapped on June 17, 2025.

A drama about siblings, not a couple

Casting a man born in 1996 and a woman born in 1983 as brother and sister means the show leans on the age gap rather than hiding it. Jiang Xin plays the elder, restrained one who watches and keeps records, and Chen Zheyuan, with a buzz cut, plays the one who walks away from his family and takes the hard physical job.

For Chen Zheyuan the part is a departure. He is more often cast as a gentle campus lead or a ruler with a commanding stare, and several r/CDrama viewers said the role suits him better. One wrote that he does well "when he's just being a normal human". A viewer who watched three episodes found his acting "not bad" and his crying scenes good. Jiang Xin, who has played proud palace figures and sharp-tongued urban women, here plays someone who keeps her feelings in.

The oil town as setting

The real subject is the oil system itself, with its housing blocks, work units and chain of command. The late 1990s were a turning point for China's state industry. In 1998 the government reorganized the state oil industry around two vertically integrated groups, CNPC and Sinopec, and restructuring ran through state enterprises across that decade. The official synopsis on the iQIYI app frames the story in those terms, with factional struggles inside the oil system growing fiercer as reform pushed for higher revenue, and the ordinary people of a small town caught in them.

The production shot on location in Chongqing. For viewers used to the polished sets of palace and costume dramas, an industrial town of the 1990s is a distinctive backdrop.

Format: 12 episodes and an air-drop

There was no press conference. The date was confirmed only on the day of the premiere. One r/CDrama viewer who follows iQIYI's "coming soon" list had not seen it there, another noted that iQIYI sometimes launches series this way, and a third called it the second Chen Zheyuan drama to drop suddenly in 2026. Twelve episodes keep the story compact. Viewers who tire of 40-episode mysteries will find a finished story that can be watched in a few evenings. The r/CDrama masterpost also notes that the leads dubbed themselves.

According to the airing schedule relayed on r/CDrama, VIP members on iQIYI got three episodes on October 15 and two on October 16, then one a day on October 17 to 20, with no episodes from October 21 to 23. We found no official heat or viewing figures this early and cite none.

What overseas viewers are saying

The first-impressions masterpost on r/CDrama had 16 comments by October 16, so this is a small sample and not a poll. The mood is mixed. One viewer, three episodes in, found the show "rather unexciting for a suspense drama" and said there was "nothing novel so far", and that they might not finish it. Most of the other comments are about the lead, with several saying Chen Zheyuan is better in grounded modern roles than in costume parts, and one viewer who had seen only the first episode called the show interesting but heavy.

Where to watch

The series airs on iQIYI in China, with the Kiwi TV (奇异果TV) app carrying it too. For viewers abroad, r/CDrama lists the iQIYI international app and iQIYI's YouTube channel, where the first episode was posted and later ones were due to follow.
