Danwei means 'work unit'. In the planned economy it was the state employer around which urban life was organised: it paid wages, assigned housing, ran the school and clinic and often controlled permissions to marry or move. Whole families lived in compounds built by one unit. The system faded as state enterprises were restructured in the 1990s, which is why dramas set in that decade keep returning to it. Light the Dark places the Chen family in housing supplied by a petroleum danwei.
