About the drama
Campus romances usually sell the first crush and end at graduation. Lighter and Princess (点燃我，温暖你, Dian Ran Wo, Wen Nuan Ni, "ignite me, warm you") follows its couple from the first term of university into the working world, and the pull of the series is how that long arc tests them.
Li Xun (李峋, played by Chen Feiyu, 陈飞宇) is a brash programming genius with a sharp tongue and little patience. Zhu Yun (朱韵, Zhang Jingyi, 张婧仪) is a determined, high-achieving student who arrives at university with a plan for her life. He is not the flawless male lead of the genre. A Jiemian review from November 2022 liked that he carries scars from his family background and has hurt people before, which made him more believable to the reviewer.
It was a conversation piece when it aired. According to Jiemian, it ran four episodes on the premiere night on November 3, 2022, topped the Maoyan daily heat chart for six days in a row and passed 10,000 on Youku's own heat index. The same review noted criticism too: slow opening episodes told partly in flashback, and dialogue kept so close to the novel that it sounds old-fashioned.

Zhu Yun's first weeks at university are upended when Li Xun barges into them. She takes him for a rich, idle troublemaker. In fact he is a gifted programmer, and after several clashes the two begin to respect each other. When a senior makes trouble for Zhu Yun, Li Xun steps in, and he later invites her to join the team he assembles to win a major programming contest for the school.
From there the series moves out of the dormitories and into the world of work, following the two as they struggle through setbacks and keep returning to each other.
The story begins at a university and carries on into the workplace. It is adapted from two novels by the Jinjiang Literature City author Twentine: Dahuoji yu Gongzhu Qun: Huangcao Yuan (打火机与公主裙·荒草园, "Lighter and Princess Dress: Wild Grass Garden") and Dahuoji yu Gongzhu Qun: Changming Deng (打火机与公主裙·长明灯, "Lighter and Princess Dress: Eternal Lamp"). The series was announced under the first novel's title, Lighter and Princess Dress, and renamed on November 1, 2022, two days before it began.
Liu Junjie (刘俊杰) directed, and Alibaba Pictures and Youku were among the producers. Jiemian wrote in November 2022 that the series was marketed squarely at university students.
Reception was mixed early on. Jiemian reported on November 8, 2022 that its Douban score stood at 7.2, praised the leads' screen chemistry and the suspense in the romance, and judged its audience growth solid rather than spectacular.
