About the drama
Most modern fantasy dramas ask you to believe in a hidden world and then hurry past it. Love on the Turquoise Land (枭起青壤, Xiao Qi Qing Rang) lingers there. It takes the folk-horror tradition of Chinese "strange tales" (志怪, zhiguai) and sets it in the present day, among sculpture studios, mountain roads, hotels and ordinary towns, so the creatures arrive in places that look entirely familiar.
The leads are Dilraba (迪丽热巴) as Nie Jiuluo (聂九罗) and Chen Xingxu (陈星旭) as Yan Tuo (炎拓), and the story is built on their wary, slow-forming trust. Zhang Li (张俪) plays the antagonist. The series ran 32 episodes on Tencent Video from November 22, 2025, and is finished. It suits viewers who like a monster-of-the-week structure that gradually feeds a larger mystery, with fight scenes that use a Tang-style sabre.

Nie Jiuluo works as a sculptor, and that is the part of her life the world sees. She is also the latest bearer of the "Mad Blade" (疯刀, fengdao) title in the Nanshan Hunters (南山猎人), a hidden organization of people said to descend from the Qin dynasty's "Headwrap Army" (缠头军), who track and kill the underground creatures called dixiao (地枭, "earth owls"), which avoid light and live far longer than humans.
Yan Tuo seems to be the pampered heir of a wealthy family, adopted by Lin Xirou (林喜柔), who leads the human-shaped dixiao. In fact he carries a grudge over what happened to his own family and has spent years close to the people he distrusts. His path crosses Jiuluo's, and the two start out as opponents. After several close calls they begin to cooperate, and the investigation reaches back two thousand years to the legend of Xu Fu (徐福), the court magician who was sent to find an elixir of immortality.
The setting is contemporary China, filmed on location in Zhejiang, with Ningbo as the production base. The series is adapted from the novel of the same name by Wei Yu (尾鱼). Directors Tian Li (田里) and He Tan (何坦) led the production, which began shooting in March 2024 and wrapped in August.
The title is written with the character 枭, "owl", which in this story names the creatures themselves.
