zhìguài · 'records of the strange': tales of ghosts, spirits and marvels

Share card for this term

Zhiguai means 'records of the strange'. It is an old Chinese tradition of short tales about ghosts, spirits, fox demons and marvels, recorded as if they were true. Modern mystery dramas borrow its mood, where the supernatural is the surface and a human culprit is behind it. The Tang Mist works this way: ghosts and fox spirits appear in each case, and Di Renjie's job is to find the people behind them.
