About the drama
Reborn (焕羽, Huan Yu) takes a school drama and gives it a mystery at its center. Instead of a romance that drives the plot, the engine is a question: what really happened to a girl who is no longer there to speak for herself.
It premiered on Tencent Video on June 19, 2025, and ran 23 episodes. The producer, director and both screenwriters are women, and Zi Niu News reported that the team aimed for a youth story with real texture, not what they called "industrial sugar."
Zhang Jingyi (张婧仪) plays the lead, Qiao Qingyu (乔青羽), and Zhou Yiran (周翊然) plays Ming Sheng (明盛), the classmate who helps her. Their friendship is the warm side of a story that spends a lot of time on rumor, family pressure and what happens to teenagers when adults would rather not talk.

In 2007, sixteen-year-old Qiao Qingyu and her family are worn down by rumors about the death of her sister, Qiao Beiyu (乔贝羽). They leave their small county town, Shunyun (顺云), for the provincial capital, Huanzhou (寰州). Qingyu wants her family's life to return to normal, and she believes that can only happen once the true cause of her sister's death is known.
At her new school she gets help from a classmate, Ming Sheng, described by Zi Niu News as a rebellious school heartthrob. As the truth starts to emerge, Qingyu has to decide how far she will go to get justice for her sister, even when it costs her at home.
The story begins in 2007 and moves between a small county town and a provincial capital, with the school, the family and the wider community as the three arenas.
Zi Niu News, a Yangtze Evening Post outlet, wrote that the series puts a mystery line into the youth genre and uses it to face issues such as left-behind children, rumor and bullying, pressure inside close-knit communities, and gaps in sex education and HIV awareness. The same outlet reported overseas viewers discussing it in large numbers.
The title combines 焕 (huan, "to renew, to glow") and 羽 (yu, "feather"); the 羽 also appears in both sisters' names, Qingyu and Beiyu. Zi Niu News reported that the character posters carried the phrase "wings renewed."
The production came from Xixi Pictures (西嘻影业) and Tencent Video, with Liu Ziwei (刘紫微) directing and Qian Jingjing (钱晶晶) and Xu Ziyuan (徐子元) writing.
