About the drama
The Princess's Gambit (桃花映江山, Tao Hua Ying Jiang Shan, "peach blossoms reflect the realm") belongs to a familiar family: the marriage of convenience that starts as a trade of blows. A princess and a chancellor each assume the other is a tool. Neither is wrong, and the series spends its length on what happens when two schemers who respect each other's skill find they are on the same side.
What it offers beyond the format is a heroine who is more than the person things happen to. Jiang Taohua (姜桃花, played by Meng Ziyi, 孟子义) endures coercion and captivity, but the story keeps handing her moves of her own, and the English-language review site Chasing Dramas singles out that resilience as one of the show's best points.

Jiang Taohua is a princess of the kingdom of Beiyuan (北苑国) who agrees to a marriage alliance with a prince of the neighboring kingdom of Qi (祁国), partly to protect her younger brother. A scandal engineered by his rivals ruins the match, and she instead ends up married to Shen Zaiye (沈在野, played by Liu Xueyi, 刘学义), Qi's Left Chancellor, who already has a household of his own, including the gentle but scheming Meng Zhenzhen (孟蓁蓁).
Their marriage begins as a contract between enemies. Over time the two become allies against stronger opponents among Qi's princes, and the question of love gets tangled up with the question of duty.
The setting is a pair of rival kingdoms, Beiyuan and Qi, where marriage is a form of diplomacy and the princes of Qi compete for the throne. The series is adapted from the novel Tao Hua Zhe Jiang Shan (桃花折江山) by Bai Lu Cheng Shuang (白鹭成双), directed by Yi Jun (易军) and written by Su Ni (苏妮). Filming began at Hengdian in May 2024, and it premiered on Tencent Video on June 25, 2025, running 36 episodes.
Reception was cool. Chasing Dramas gave it 6.5 out of 10 after the first 19 episodes, calling it an adequate politically focused romance whose twists are often illogical. It praised the ruthless power plays and Jiang Taohua's resilience, and it found fault with plot holes, a romance in which Shen threatens and hurts his wife without the show fully addressing it, and repetitive close-up photography. The reviewer also noted that its viewing numbers were modest, averaging under 15 million views per episode.
