教坊司
jiàofāngsī · the imperial entertainment bureau, where condemned officials' women were sent
The Jiaofangsi was the court's bureau of music and entertainment, which organised ceremonial performances and kept the performers. Under the Ming dynasty, women of the families of condemned officials could be assigned to it as punishment, which turned a court office into a destination of ruin for an elite household. In period dramas, a family's fall is often marked by the line that its women are to be sent there. Tears on Command points to the Shen family's sentence in Against the Current.
