Kusang is the ritual wailing done at funerals, in many places by paid mourners who sing or cry out laments for the dead. The name means literally 'wailing the funeral'. It is meant to show filial grief and to fill the mourning hall with sound. In Small Town Remedy, Ai Chen demonstrates it to a customer in the funeral shop, with a pitch about the band and the microphone, so the loudest grief in episode 1 is a product demo.

Small Town Remedy: How a Town Takes a Man Back
A boy sent south at eight comes home in his thirties to a Northeastern town he no longer knows. Small Town Remedy is less about whom its doctor cures than about how the town refuses to leave him alone, and about the actor who says he had never wanted a role this much.
