qiepian jian yanji · 'judging acting from clips': rating a performance from short cut-out clips

Share card for this term

Qiepian are short clips cut from an episode and passed around on Weibo, Douyin or Bilibili; jian yanji means to appraise someone's acting. Together the phrase mocks the habit of declaring an actor good or bad from a few seconds lifted out of context, without having watched the scene around it. It comes up most when two dramas air against each other and fans of each side post the other show's weakest moments. The usual reply is a question: did you actually watch it?
