shàngxīng · 'going up to the satellite': airing on a provincial satellite channel

Share card for this term

Shangxing literally means 'going up to the satellite'. A satellite channel (卫视, weishi) is a provincial broadcaster's channel that carries its programming nationwide, and a drama that airs on one is said to shangxing. It matters because satellite airing brings a national audience and the prestige of television, and it requires regulatory approval that a streaming-only release does not. A piece on AI dramas uses it to explain what 'on the schedule' means for a Chinese series.
