Shadow Punisher: The Costume Detective Drama With No Romance and a Team Worth Watching

A guide to the iQIYI costume mystery Shadow Punisher as it airs: an imperial detective bureau, Luo Yunxi's hidden-identity lead, a buddy-comedy trio and a case-of-the-week format with a folk-horror streak.

Shadow Punisher: The Costume Detective Drama With No Romance and a Team Worth Watching

Why this one

Most costume mysteries promise a love story somewhere behind the corpses. Shadow Punisher (魅影神捕, Mei Ying Shen Bu) does not. A viewer on r/CDrama who has followed it for weeks reports no romance through episode 22, and says the source novel has none either. What you get instead is a trio of investigators at the imperial court's detective bureau, a villain faction with a taste for the macabre, and a fair amount of humor.

The show premiered on iQIYI on October 2, 2026, with six episodes on the first day, and runs 30 episodes in all. It is still airing as this guide is written, and this guide covers only the opening stretch of the story, without spoilers.

Two things make it worth a look. The first is its director, Zheng Weiwen (郑伟文, known in English as Steve Cheng), who co-directed The Untamed (陈情令) in 2019. The second is the pairing of Luo Yunxi (罗云熙) and Alen Fang (方逸伦, Fang Yilun), who last shared a screen in Whispers of Fate (水龙吟), Mango TV's 2025 martial-arts fantasy, where viewers say their characters were on opposite sides, and here play partners.

The setup

The story is set in the thirty-seventh year of the Hongyun era, in a fictional realm called the Great Shi dynasty (大世王朝). The court keeps an elite investigative office, the Divine Constable Bureau (神捕司, Shen Bu Si), to catch bandits and solve the strange cases the ordinary magistrates cannot.

Li Si (黎斯), played by Luo Yunxi, is the court's Fourth Prince, long declared dead, who goes by the cover name Lord Qingyang (青阳公子). He gets himself into the bureau to find out what really happened behind his own faked death. His new colleagues have codenames by specialty: Meng Rui (蒙锐), the "ghost hunter" (鬼捕, gui bu) known for martial skill and a personal grudge; Bai Zhenzhu (白珍珠), the "frost hunter" (霜捕, shuang bu), billed as the best female coroner in the land; and the bureau chief Xuanyuan Shan (轩辕善). Together the first three form the show's core team.

Each arc is a self-contained case wrapped around a longer thread. According to the official launch coverage in 2025, the cases include puppets that kidnap children and a carved box said to predict the death of whoever sees it. Behind them stands a remnant of a fallen kingdom called Liluo (离罗) that is working toward something larger. The bureau solves them by reading clues through the five elements and eight trigrams (五行八卦, wuxing bagua), according to the launch announcement, so the supernatural trappings come with a puzzle attached.

Cast and crew

iQIYI produced the series with Beijing Zhanyou Culture (北京战友文化) and iQIYI's Aisatang studio (爱撒糖工作室). Zheng Weiwen is credited as chief director, with Liu Chong (刘崇) also directing, and the writers are Chen Yuhan (陈宇晗) and Hou Wenwen (侯文雯). It is adapted from a novel of the same name by Wang Ke (王珂). Huang Wei (黄薇), the stylist behind a long list of costume hits, designed the look. Filming began at Hengdian on June 13, 2025.

A trio that works as comedy

The most common point in viewers' early reactions is not the plot but the chemistry. A first-impressions comment on r/CDrama said that once the exposition-heavy first two episodes pass, the show is "an ensemble drama where the team just happens to do some crime-solving".

That is an accurate warning as much as a recommendation. The same commenter admitted having to "adjust my genre expectations", because the series is not built around whodunit suspense. It is built around three people who enjoy each other's company, with humor placed into the investigations. A scene in which a character is asked why he is not kneeling drew the strongest praise, and the commenter was pleased that Luo Yunxi's comic timing is intact since Love Is Sweet (半是蜜糖半是伤, 2020).

Luo Yunxi is best known to overseas viewers for the xianxia drama Till the End of the Moon (长月烬明, 2023) and for Whispers of Fate. Here the role is lighter and more guarded, a man who is always concealing something. Not every viewer is convinced: one early commenter found the acting flat across the cast, and another felt his performance was muted and put it down to direction or the way the character is written. Both reactions came in the first week and are worth weighing against the many viewers who enjoy the cast.

Cases with a taste for the macabre

The cases lean into the uncanny: puppets, a box that foretells death, a villain faction that dabbles in forbidden arts. One viewer described the show as "a darker, gothier, spookier" take on the fantasy mood of Whispers of Fate.

Reports disagree on how many cases there are: TMDB lists eight, while the 2025 launch announcement spoke of six. Treat it as roughly seven or eight and do not count on a precise number. The format is easy to follow. Each case runs for a few episodes, the team gets a clear setup and a solution, and the long thread about the court and Liluo advances between them.

Women on the bureau

One commenter in the October 14 recommendation thread liked having "a middle-aged female character that is not a wife, mother, concubine or servant", meaning the bureau chief, played by He Hongshan. Bai Zhenzhu's work as a forensic examiner, reading clues from remains, is the other place where the show gives a woman the central role in solving the case. For viewers tired of palace dramas where women are only competing for status, this is a different setting.

Release and where it is being talked about

Shadow Punisher is an iQIYI exclusive in China. VIP subscribers got six episodes on October 2, and Hong Kong outlet HK01 reports that the regular VIP schedule runs to a finale on October 22. The r/CDrama thread hosts note that the platform's paid early access is available, so some viewers are already well ahead of the regular schedule. Check which episodes your account can see.

We cite no heat or ranking figures, since the numbers we found could not be traced to iQIYI or a mainstream outlet.

What overseas viewers are saying

The r/CDrama first-impressions thread on October 2 and a recommendation post on October 14 give a mixed-to-warm picture. Fans praise the lead pairing, the soundtrack and the cases, and several say they started because of Luo Yunxi. One described the premise as "Besties solving crimes in a fantasy world". The first-impressions thread carries frank doubts about stiff acting, bright costumes that clash with the dark subject and a slow first two episodes. Skeptics are mostly staying for the cast and waiting for the first full case to land.

As a rule of thumb, watch through episode six before you decide. That covers the setup, the first case and the point where the trio begins to work as a team.

Where to watch

In China the show is on iQIYI. For international viewers the r/CDrama masterpost lists iQIYI's international app and website (iq.com) and iQIYI's official YouTube channel. Availability, subtitle languages and early-access options vary by region, so check iQIYI in your country.
