The Double: The Costume Revenge Drama That Opens at Peak Anger
A guide to Youku's 2024 costume revenge drama The Double: a wife buried alive by her husband returns to the capital under another woman's name, Wu Jinyan carries the revenge, and Wang Xingyue's Duke Su is still being discussed overseas.

Why this one
Most revenge dramas hold their anger back and spend it slowly. The Double (墨雨云间, Mo Yu Yun Jian, "ink rain amid the clouds") spends it first. In the opening episodes Xue Fangfei (薛芳菲), the daughter of a county magistrate, is betrayed by her husband and buried alive. She survives, and the rest of the series is her return to the capital under another woman's name.
The series premiered on Youku on June 2, 2024, and ran 40 episodes, with the last one released on June 22. It is finished, and it stays in conversation: in October 2026 a thread on r/CDrama about one of its supporting characters, Duke Su, drew well over a hundred comments more than two years after the finale. Plot points here stay at the level of the opening episodes.
The structure is the point. The show states the wrong at full strength in the first hour, then moves quickly through what the heroine does about it. Chinese viewers have a word for the kind of pleasure that results, shuang (爽, "satisfying, cathartic"), and the drama is usually discussed in those terms, for better and for worse.
The setup
Xue Fangfei's husband, Shen Yurong (沈玉容), betrays her, and she is buried alive. Jiang Li (姜梨), the daughter of a chancellor, whose life Xue had earlier saved, rescues her. After Jiang Li dies, Xue takes her identity, goes to the capital and sets out to find those responsible. With the help of the nobleman Xiao Heng (萧蘅), she works toward the truth behind her father's wrongful conviction.
The series is adapted from the web novel Di Jia Qian Jin (嫡嫁千金, "the highborn daughter's marriage") by Qian Shan Cha Ke (千山茶客). The disguise is a familiar device in costume drama, and the closest recent comparison is Against the Current, where a disgraced noblewoman lives in the household of the family that abandoned her under a dead servant's name. The two shows share a premise and differ in where they start. Against the Current opens with the disguise already in place and runs 47 episodes. The Double opens with the injury itself and runs 40. We cover the other show in Against the Current: a disgraced noblewoman takes a dead servant's name.

Anger first, release after
The opening is built to make the audience angry on the heroine's behalf, and the rest of the series pays that anger out. Hong Kong outlet HK01 reported that viewers described the drama as satisfying and fast, and that the draw was the revenge storyline and quick pace, which the outlet compared to the rhythm of a micro-drama (short serialized dramas made for phones). The same piece also lists the criticisms: a stretched-out feel, small-minded palace intrigue, an idealized heroine and uneven acting. Its headline sums up the split as a show that draws audiences but not praise.
The numbers that circulated at the time describe the first part of that equation. According to Beijing News on June 5, 2024, the drama passed a heat index of 10,000 on Youku within two days, the fastest of that year on the platform at the time. HK01, citing Dengta (灯塔) figures, reported about 50.91 million full-episode views on the first day and more than 600 million over the first seven days. The same article gave a Douban score of 6.9 from about 30,000 raters after seven days, with fewer than half the episodes aired. Scores move over time, so treat these as a snapshot of the first week.
Compared with a slower build like Against the Current, the pleasure here comes earlier and in larger pieces. The two designs answer different questions: how long can a story hold its heroine in hiding, and how soon should it let her act.
Wu Jinyan as the driver
Wu Jinyan came to wide attention as Wei Yingluo (魏璎珞) in Story of Yanxi Palace (延禧攻略) in 2018. HK01 reports that her casting as a vengeful heroine was well received. A review on the English-language blog Chasing Dramas calls her performance a clear improvement on her earlier work and sees the same fast, heroine-driven approach as in Yanxi Palace, while noting that the plot is not tightly written and rewards not thinking too hard about it.
That reading matters for how the show is built. The heroine is the engine: she plans, the people around her help. The same reviewer argues that this is why the male lead's reduced screen time later in the series helps the story rather than hurting it.
Duke Su: why the thread keeps growing
The r/CDrama thread was started in October 2026, with the title "Duke Su from the Double...Sheesh", and the comments show what keeps the character in circulation.
The most common point is the combination of voice and presence. One commenter called it "one of the most insane face card + voice combos I've ever seen", and another wrote simply "Duke su ruins you." Several commenters brought up his eyeliner, which they liked despite not usually liking makeup on male characters. The Chasing Dramas reviewer took the opposite view and found it jarring. A recurring remark is surprise at how young Wang Xingyue is; one commenter said they had assumed he was in his early thirties from the way he carried himself.
A second thread is that he was a revelation to viewers who knew him only from other series. One commenter said they had seen the actor in several dramas as a second male lead who did not get the girl, and were unprepared for how Duke Su came across. English Wikipedia lists The Double as his breakout year, and says he won Best Young Actor in a TV Series at the 10th Wenrong Awards (文荣奖) for it.
A third thread is that for several commenters The Double was their way into Chinese drama. One said the show was the "gateway to my cdrama obsession", and another said no male lead had matched Duke Su since their first watch. That helps explain why a character from a 2024 series is still the subject of a lively thread: a viewer's first favorite stays a first favorite.
Not everyone agrees. One commenter who stayed for him said they "didn't really like the double that much", and another dropped the series after episode 6 because Wang Xingyue had little screen time and the family affairs did not hold their interest. One commenter recommended the novel for more of Duke Su's story and background, saying the drama left out other characters. The story belongs to Xue Fangfei, and he supports it.
Where to watch
In China the series streamed on Youku. Overseas, listings show it on Netflix, Disney+ and Rakuten Viki in various regions, and Netflix carried it internationally from June 2024. Availability varies by country, so check which of these services lists it where you live.
What overseas viewers are saying
The Duke Su thread is one of several posts about the series on r/CDrama this autumn. Others include a September post praising it in strong terms and an August post from a first-time viewer, so people are still arriving at it. These are viewers who chose to post, not a poll.
In the Duke Su thread the mood is warm, and much of the praise is about the actor and the character rather than the plot. Even the commenters who were lukewarm about the series, or left it early, tend to say something kind about the leads' chemistry or about Duke Su.
