Tientsin Mystic: Li Xian's 2017 River-Salvage Mystery in Republican-Era Tianjin
A guide to the 2017 iQIYI mystery Tientsin Mystic: a river-police captain in 1920s Tianjin, Tianxia Bachang's novel, the series that lifted Li Xian, how it compares with A Prophet, and what happened to the second season.

Why this one
Tientsin Mystic (河神, He Shen, "River God") is the 2017 iQIYI series that first put Li Xian (李现) at the head of a cast. The Paper (澎湃新闻) reached for it when it previewed his 2026 series A Prophet, and it is the more direct way into the Republican-era mystery that comparison points to. It premiered on iQIYI on July 19, 2017, and runs 24 episodes of about 45 minutes. "Tientsin" is the old spelling of Tianjin.
The hook is a job. In the 1920s port of Tianjin, a canal-shipping hub, Guo Deyou (郭得友) leads a river-police squad that pulls bodies out of the water. He inherited a trade technique from his master, the "Old River God": dian yan bian yuan (点烟辨冤, "light a cigarette to judge a wrong"), a smoke-based way of reading the dead. A reviewer on the SKJAM blog noted that nearly every supernatural event in the show comes with a doubtful scientific explanation.
The setup
The official iQIYI synopsis opens on a city hit by repeated floods, with strange events in the river. During a river-god ceremony, according to the SKJAM review, Guo recovers two bodies: an infant and the chairman of the local shipping chamber of commerce. The chairman's son, Ding Mao (丁卯), played by Zhang Ming'en (张铭恩), is a trained forensic investigator and joins Guo to find out what happened. They are helped by Gu Ying (顾影, Wang Zixuan 王紫璇), a young woman who is apprenticed to a folk sorceress, and by a reporter, Xiao Lanlan (肖兰兰, Chen Yumi 陈芋米).
The trail leads back twenty years, to a cult called Mogu Dao (魔古道, roughly "the demonic ancient way") that once terrorised the city and has returned. Every two episodes form a self-contained case of about 90 minutes, according to Jiemian (界面新闻), and each episode opens with a storyteller-style recap of what came before.

The director is Tian Li (田里). The source is the novel He Shen: Gui Shui Guai Tan (河神:鬼水怪谈, "River God: Tales of Ghost Waters") by Tianxia Bachang (天下霸唱), better known for the Ghost Blows Out the Light (鬼吹灯) tomb-raiding novels. The series is credited to iQIYI and Gongfu Pictures (工夫影业), with other co-producers.
From novel to screen
Jiemian wrote that the novel is far less famous than Ghost Blows Out the Light, and that the series owes its profile to the adaptation and the production. Guangzhou Daily, comparing three adaptations of Tianxia Bachang's books in July 2017, said this one has fewer supernatural elements than the novel. In an interview with The Paper (澎湃新闻), Li Xian said the show makes Guo Deyou younger than the book's version by roughly ten to twenty years; in the novel he is an older man called "Master Guo" (郭师傅), living alone in a ruined temple.
The result is a mystery that keeps its folk-legend dressing but argues with it. The SKJAM review calls the tone pulpy: the early episodes are mostly mystery, and the show then lurches into action and horror and ends in master-villain territory. The river-god title is a trade lineage inside the story. Guo is the "Little River God" (小河神, xiao he shen) to his master's "Old River God".
Li Xian's breakout
Li Xian had played supporting roles before. The Paper's interview, published on August 17, 2017, describes the series as the one that lifted him, with Douban at 8.3 from more than 24,000 ratings at that point and his following rising with it. A Taiwanese columnist for NOWnews wrote in July 2017 that it was his first time as a male lead, praised his plain but forceful acting, and singled out Zhang Ming'en as well. In January 2018 iQIYI's own announcement of its upcoming slate described him as someone who had drawn very high attention through this show. Jiemian later wrote that he was a little-known actor then and became a top name after Go Go Squid! (亲爱的,热爱的) in July 2019.
The Douban score has moved. Guangzhou Daily listed 7.9 in the show's first week, against 5.9 and 2.8 for the other two Tianxia Bachang adaptations in its comparison. Figures reported since range from 8.1 to 8.3, depending on the source and the date, and iQIYI's own page shows 8.7 on its internal scale. Reported play counts conflict, so none is given here.
Next to A Prophet
A Prophet (我不是大师, Wo Bu Shi Da Shi) puts Li Xian back in Republican-era China, 24 episodes aired from September 24, 2026. The Paper's premiere-day piece made the comparison: the folk-legend atmosphere is similar, but A Prophet strips off the occult shell and shows a swindling business inside. Tientsin Mystic goes the other way, keeping the shell on and leaving the question open. A Prophet: The Republican-Era Con Drama Where Every Trick Has a Trick Behind It is our guide to it.
Li Xian's next lead after this one was Sword Dynasty (剑王朝), the 2019 iQIYI wuxia series, which iQIYI announced alongside Tientsin Mystic 2 in the same January 2018 slate. Sword Dynasty: The Sword-Realm Revenge Drama That First Paired Li Xian and Li Yitong is our guide to it.
The second season
iQIYI listed Tientsin Mystic 2 (河神2) in its January 2018 slate. Filming began on November 20, 2018, with Jin Shijia (金世佳, also known as Kingscar Jin) replacing Li Xian as Guo Deyou. Zhang Ming'en returns as Ding Mao, and iQIYI's international page lists 24 episodes and the year 2020.
A 2020 Jiemian article put the second season's Douban score at 7.5, from about 20,000 raters. On r/CDrama, one viewer wrote that the new actor is "also charming," and the same viewer said that it took about two episodes to get used to the change. As of a November 2024 r/CDrama thread, there was no official word on a third season. A separate Youku series, The Guardian Liu Hengshun, has circulated under the same English name in trailer posts; it is a different story and cast, and a commenter said it has nothing to do with the 2017 show.
What overseas viewers are saying
The r/CDrama threads on the show are small, around a dozen comments each, and several of the posters found it on Netflix. They describe a slow start. One wrote that the show has "a larger picture which ties everything together" in its later episodes; another said it differs from other Republican-era shows, with the added mysticism. A third viewer thought the time period and "not really fitting into a standard genre" had limited its popularity, and called the first season one of their absolute favourites. The SKJAM blog's 2021 review judged the payoffs better as the series goes on, praised its creepy main villain, found Gu Ying tiresome in places and listed content warnings: body horror, harm to children, suicide, drug abuse and drowning.

Where to watch
iQIYI's international service lists the series, though two r/CDrama viewers in 2021 described its English subtitles as thin. Netflix carried the first season in some regions from 2018, and viewers later reported it had been removed. Availability varies by region, so check each service in your own country.
