Sword Dynasty: The Sword-Realm Revenge Drama That First Paired Li Xian and Li Yitong
A guide to the 2019 iQIYI wuxia series Sword Dynasty: a chronically ill wine-shop youth who sets himself against a royal house, a world organised around the sword and levels of cultivation, Li Xian and Li Yitong's first pairing, and a divided reception.

Why this one
Sword Dynasty (剑王朝, Jian Wang Chao) is the 2019 iQIYI wuxia series that first paired Li Xian (李现) and Li Yitong (李一桐). The two reunited in 2026 for A Prophet. It premiered on iQIYI on December 6, 2019, and runs 34 episodes of about 45 minutes.
The hook is a boy from a wine shop. Ding Ning (丁宁), a chronically ill young man from the city of Changling, rises fast in a violent age and sets himself against the royal house of the kingdom of Heng. The platform synopsis on Viki puts it as a revenge story: a young warrior with a chronic illness, an unlikely alliance with a noble warrior, and a challenge to Heng. Its weapon of choice is in the title. Wuxia (武侠, "martial heroes") usually means fighters bound by a code. Here the fighting is organised around the sword, and around a ladder of cultivation levels that the characters climb.
The setup
The series is set in an invented era modelled on the Warring States period, when several kingdoms fought to unify China. Heng is the strongest of them. In iQIYI's Chinese synopsis, Ding Ning becomes the talk of the martial world through feats such as ban ri tong xuan (半日通玄, "half a day to comprehend the mystic") and shi ri po jing (十日破境, "ten days to break through a realm"). A realm (境, jing) is a level of cultivation, so those lines present skill as something that can be measured and raced through.
Zhangsun Qianxue (长孙浅雪), played by Li Yitong, travels with him posing as his aunt. The king of Heng and his queen have a past with a famous sword master, Liang Jingmeng (梁惊梦), and the synopsis says the truth of their betrayal of him is slowly uncovered. The synopsis then turns to Ding Ning's friendships with the kingdom's other young swordsmen, a group that includes the crown prince.

The director is Jones Wah-Kon Ma (马华干, Ma Huagan), and Rao Jun (饶俊) is the screenwriter. Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚), the film director, is credited as supervising producer (监制, jianzhi), and iQIYI's January 2018 slate announcement listed the show among its projects with major film talent. The source is the web novel of the same title by Wu Zui (无罪, "Not Guilty"). Filming ran from December 2017 to April 2018 at Hengdian World Studios, about twenty months before the premiere. The finale aired on January 5, 2020. iQIYI had already released an animated adaptation of the novel, which premiered on April 26, 2017, according to English Wikipedia. The same source lists Li Xian as a nominee for Best Actor at the 2020 Asia Contents Awards and for the 2020 Actors of China Award, and lists the series among nominees for Best Design Production at the Asia Contents Awards; none is listed as a win.
A world built on the sword
A New Weekly (新周刊) writer, posting on The Paper's (澎湃新闻) contributor platform on December 13, 2019, described the setting as an age in which yi jian shuo hua (以剑说话, "let swords do the talking"), with cultivators fighting each other for supreme power. Its main point of interest is about genre: Wu Zui's novel is xianxia (仙侠, "immortal heroes"), cultivation fantasy, and the series, it says, moves toward wuxia, with a more realistic historical setting, staged martial arts and a visible sword culture.
You can see the design choices on screen. Per English Wikipedia, the young heroes wear plain linen while the rulers wear black and gold and the palace is red. A first-episode review by the blogger Lone Crane, posted the day after the premiere, judged the fight editing and cinematography better than average for an action drama and the fight CGI good, though some shots visibly used green screen. The same reviewer had not read the novel and noted that some fight-scene dialogue reportedly matches it word for word.
Li Xian and Li Yitong
iQIYI announced the casting on January 16, 2018. Its release said that Li Xian had drawn very high attention through Tientsin Mystic (河神, He Shen), and that Li Yitong had performed well in the new version of The Legend of the Condor Heroes (射雕英雄传). In 2026, The Paper's premiere-day coverage of A Prophet (我不是大师, Wo Bu Shi Da Shi) counted it as their second collaboration. A Prophet: The Republican-Era Con Drama Where Every Trick Has a Trick Behind It is our guide to it.
The two shows cast the pairing differently. In Sword Dynasty the two are fellow travellers on a revenge road with a false family tie between them, in a fantasy kingdom. In A Prophet they play an apprentice swindler and a woman who is not what she seems, in the Republican period. One r/CDrama poster described the 2019 series as Li Xian's first wuxia series when the trailer appeared.
Next to Tientsin Mystic
Li Xian's previous lead was Tientsin Mystic, which iQIYI announced alongside Sword Dynasty in the same slate. Tientsin Mystic: Li Xian's 2017 River-Salvage Mystery in Republican-Era Tianjin is our guide to it.
Reception, then and now
At home, iQIYI's listing page shows a score of 7.2 for the series; the figure is the platform's own and changes. The adaptation drew complaints: a January 2021 roundup on a Taiwanese entertainment site, BEAUTY, lists Sword Dynasty among costume dramas adapted from novels that online commenters called heavily altered, citing cuts to the novel's cast and a rushed final stretch.
What overseas viewers are saying
The English-language record is thin. When the trailer appeared in October and November 2019, the r/CDrama posts drew only a handful of comments. One viewer wrote "I will watch anything with Li Xian"; another said they were excited about Li Yitong. Two commenters did not like Li Xian's hairstyle.
A February 2021 r/CDrama thread titled "thoughts?!" has four comments, all lukewarm. One said the action and acting were good but the female lead could have been removed from the plot without changing it, and that events arrived in a chunky sequence. Another called it "very choppy" and said the acting from two well-regarded leads was disappointing. A third said they skipped it because the reviews were not good.
Where to watch
iQIYI's international service lists Sword Dynasty with English subtitles advertised in the page title. Viki lists it with English and eleven other subtitle languages, behind a Viki Pass badge. JustWatch lists a subscription option on Prime Video in the United Kingdom. Availability varies by region, so check each service in your own country.
