Where the Mask Ends: What Chinese Viewers Are Saying

Tian Xiwei plays two women who share a face in Where the Mask Ends, and Chinese viewers are split: some of the most-liked Douban reviews praise her double performance, others call the villainess too blatant and the heroine's poise unearned. Here are the comments they liked most in the first week.

Where the Mask Ends premiered on October 16 on CCTV and Youku, with Tian Xiwei in a double role: Wei Rao, the real daughter of a noble house who was switched as a child and grew up on the streets, and Jun Dai, the false daughter raised in comfort in her place. A few days in, Chinese viewers are arguing about exactly that — whether the two performances convince, and whether the story earns the street-raised heroine her poise.

We picked some of the most-liked comments from Douban reviews, Weibo and a Douban fan group. Each card shows the original Chinese with our translation underneath; names and avatars are hidden, and like counts are as of October 20.

I love Wei Rao and I love Jun Dai. Tian Xiwei genuinely blew me away this time — her acting and line delivery are the real deal. / It tries a bit too hard — it'd be better reined in. A villainess this blatant just looks dumb. What people want is a clever villainess. A little disappointed.Save

So Tian has crashed into the villainess lane too. / This makes no sense at all. A girl run off her feet just to survive, never a moment's rest, emptying chamber pots every night, with a gambling father and a mother long ill, has no time or energy to study or reflect — so where do her composure, her unflappable nerve and her management experience come from?Save

Quick question: is it Wei Rao or Jun Dai reading the comments right now 🙇 / Ever since I started Where the Mask Ends I eat an extra bowl of rice every day — anyone get it?! Happiness, please land in Rao'er's hands 🤲Save

Where the Mask Ends passes 9,000 on Youku's Lighthouse daily views — Youku's highest single day this year / Youku's best this year!!! Legendary!!! / At least 5,400, I'd say. With a Lighthouse ratio this high it really should be over 6,000.Save
