About the drama

Heroes (说英雄谁是英雄, Shuo Yingxiong Shei Shi Yingxiong, "speaking of heroes, who is the hero") treats the jianghu, the martial-arts underworld, as a place a young person has to learn to survive in. Director Li Muge (李木戈) compared its hero Wang Xiaoshi (王小石) to a fresh graduate entering the workforce.

China News described it as a "new-style" wuxia that approaches a youth-centered jianghu in a youthful way. Each episode opens with a line of verse tied to the plot, and the first episode's red-and-yellow "Sea Sacrifice Parade" shows how far it leans into heightened visuals. The leads are Zeng Shunxi (曾舜晞) as Wang Xiaoshi, Yang Chaoyue (杨超越) as Wen Rou (温柔, "gentle") and Liu Yuning (刘宇宁) as Bai Choufei (白愁飞).

Wang Xiaoshi is a kind young man who comes down from the mountain and sets out for the first time. Entrusted with a white jade box to carry to the capital, he meets Bai Choufei, an ambitious man who badly wants to make a name, and Su Mengzhen (苏梦枕, Chen Chuhe, 陈楚河), the sickly but commanding head of the Golden Wind and Drizzle Tower (金风细雨楼). The three become sworn brothers. Wen Rou, a daughter of the Wen family, soon enters his life too.

The capital is split. The main line of the plot is the struggle between the Golden Wind and Drizzle Tower and its rival, the Six-Fen Half Hall (六分半堂), whose leader's daughter, Lei Chun (雷纯, Meng Ziyi, 孟子义), is bound up with both sides. Behind the gangs stands the court, and the series adds court politics to the novels' underworld rivalries.

Over the episodes Wang Xiaoshi tries to hold on to the reasons he left home, while Bai Choufei is drawn toward fame and power. China News said viewers responded to the brothers' loyalty.

The series is set in an imperial capital where jianghu feuds are entangled with court power struggles. It is adapted from Wen Ruian's (温瑞安) wuxia novel series of the same name, an unfinished work whose eighth volume appeared in 1996. Wang Xiaoshi is the lead of its first five volumes. Jiemian noted in June 2022 that the adaptation changed a great deal: it cut the network of "seven great bandits" around Wen Rou, showed less of the novels' lightness-skill and poison arts, and added the court.

The finale reached Tencent Video members on June 27, 2022.

Jiemian reported on June 10, 2022, that on days when episodes dropped, the series typically ranked between third and sixth on Maoyan's real-time heat chart, and fell outside the top ten on other days. A storyline involving Lei Chun drew controversy during the run, according to the same report.
