chāshǒulǐ · folded-hands salute: a Tang-and-Song gesture of respect

Share card for this term

Chashouli is the 'folded-hands salute', a gesture of respect in which the hands are crossed at the chest. It was used in the Tang and Song dynasties, and it is one of the details that productions reconstruct to look period-correct. Royal Nirvana, set in a Song-era world, worked the gesture into its court scenes.
