Fanwai means 'outside' chapters, an extra or side story that sits outside the main plot. In web novels it is the epilogue or short episodes the author adds after the ending, often about secondary characters. Television borrowed the word for spin-offs. Royal Nirvana was billed as a fanwai of Nirvana in Fire, with the same director and most of the original cast.
