Pursuit of Jade: The Butcher's Daughter, the Marquis and the Show Built Around Him
A butcher's daughter and a disgraced marquis in hiding: how a familiar costume-romance formula got a heroine who carries the load, a hero whose look is part of the design, and a simultaneous release on Tencent Video, iQIYI and Netflix.

Why this one
A butcher's daughter takes in a wounded stranger in the snow. He is really a fallen marquis living under a false name, and the two strike a marriage of convenience that turns real. That is an old costume-romance formula, and Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) does not hide it. What it changes is the weight distribution: the heroine pays the rent, wields the cleaver, and eventually leads troops, while the hero is, for much of the opening, the one being looked after.
The 40-episode drama, directed by Zeng Qingjie (曾庆杰) from the web novel Zhu Yu (逐玉) by Tuan Zi Lai Xi (团子来袭), premiered on 6 March 2026 on Tencent Video and iQIYI, with Netflix carrying it worldwide on the same day. It reached number six on Netflix's weekly Global Top 10 chart for non-English series. Within a week of release, the platforms' own heat indexes (popularity measures) were reported above 31,000 on Tencent Video and 10,000 on iQIYI.
The setup
On a snowy night, the newly orphaned Fan Changyu (樊长玉), played by Tian Xiwei (田曦薇), finds Xie Zheng (谢征), played by Zhang Linghe (张凌赫), badly injured. She works as a butcher to keep her family fed, and she nurses him. He is the Marquis of Wu'an (武安侯), a decorated general, and he hides that identity while he pursues revenge for a blood feud that began sixteen years earlier.
SaveHer reason for the marriage is practical: she enters a ruzhui (入赘) union, a matrilocal marriage in which the husband joins the wife's household, to save her family's house. In the village he passes for her frail live-in husband and uses the gentle look to mislead the neighbours, while quietly investigating the destruction of his family. Then war arrives. Fan Changyu goes onto the battlefield and becomes a decorated general herself.
The sequence is the formula's standard order: false marriage, shared house, hidden past, public upheaval. What is less standard is who earns what along the way.
An old formula, a heroine who carries the load
SaveFan Changyu is written as feisty and resilient, and on screen that translates into labour. She butchers, she supports a household, she takes the marriage on her own terms, and when the country goes to war she does not stay behind; she becomes a field commander. A review on the Philippine site The Diarist called her "a fresh take on the stereotype" of an ugly, ill-tempered butcher.
Her competence is not only a character note; it organises the plot. In the village chapters, the person with a trade and a house is Fan Changyu. The man with the secret is Xie Zheng. He is rescued into her world first, and the story then moves both of them into his.
Audiences noticed the combination. Sixth Tone, summing up the reaction on 30 March, found some viewers praising its aesthetic appeal and strong female protagonist, and others criticising it for putting visual beauty ahead of narrative coherence.
SaveBuilt around Xie Zheng
There is a second layer, and it pulls the other way. The heroine has the fresher job; the show's centre of gravity is still its hero, and the construction is visible once you look for it.
Two men in one body. At the start he is the pale, injured lodger, soft-spoken enough to fool a village. Beneath that is the marquis, a general with a family massacre to avenge. The premise gives the lead actor two registers to play: the disguise and the man beneath it. A Philippine review said Zhang Linghe "embodies the formidable Marquis Xie Zheng".
SaveThe image stays constant. Online viewers gave Xie Zheng a nickname for his look on the battlefield: fendiye jiangjun (粉底液将军, "the foundation-liquid general"). A Lianhe Zaobao column, which Hong Kong's HK01 reprinted on 29 March, observed that his face, skin and hair stay unmarked after battle. The joke is about continuity, but it points at a choice: the hero's appearance is treated as part of the story.
The world around him. The same Zaobao column cites a Shanghai review, from Shanghai Observer (上观新闻), that sees an idealised setting: snow that falls without turning to mud, a hero convalescing in bed with the windows open in winter. In the column's account, then, both the styling and the scene design keep him looking well. It also notes that defenders call the show a fictionalised idol drama, and that the source novel describes the character as strikingly handsome. The genre's own term for the formula is gu'ou (古偶, "costume idol drama").
The marketing. Zhang Linghe was already a fashion name before the show: Gucci appointed him brand ambassador in July 2024, and the South China Morning Post's profile of him carried that title.
Put these together and the arrangement is clear. Tian Xiwei's Fan Changyu gives the show its new feel. Zhang Linghe's Xie Zheng gives it its pull. The two do not contradict each other; they are two halves of a design in which the heroine moves the plot and the hero holds the frame.
SaveTwo platforms, then three
Pursuit of Jade arrived on Tencent Video and iQIYI at once, and Netflix streamed it worldwide on the same day. Where Netflix carries it, a viewer was watching in the same weeks as one in China.
The show reached sixth place on Netflix's weekly non-English series list. Sixth Tone, in a 30 March piece, reported that its Douban (豆瓣, China's main user-review site) score stood at 6.6 at that moment. The two numbers measure different things: one counts who pressed play, the other what reviewers thought.
The leak
SaveOn 21 March, with most of the run broadcast, the full 40 episodes began circulating online ahead of schedule. According to The Paper (澎湃新闻), the copies spread as cloud-drive links, some in 4K. On 22 March, Tencent Video, iQIYI and the production side issued a joint anti-piracy statement saying that rights monitoring had found people distributing and selling pirated copies of the series without permission. The number of episodes aired at the time was reported as 30 by some outlets and 32 by others; either way, eight to ten episodes were still unreleased.
The source of the files has not been publicly identified.
