Quite the Girl: A Vertical Micro-Drama Hit Rebuilt as a Long-Form Revenge Romance
A guide to Tencent Video's Quite the Girl: a heroine who plays the obedient niece to use a wealthy heir against her uncle's family, how a hit vertical micro-drama was rebuilt as a landscape long-form series, and what its two leads, Xu Mengjie and Ren Shihao, bring to it.

Why this one
Quite the Girl (好一个乖乖女, Hao Yi Ge Guai Guai Nü) took the opposite route from most adaptations. It started as a vertical micro-drama, a series of very short episodes shot in portrait format for phones, and has now been rebuilt as a landscape-format series for a conventional streaming audience. The original arrived on the Hongguo (红果) app on February 3, 2025, according to The Paper (澎湃新闻). The remake began streaming on Tencent Video (腾讯视频) on October 12, 2026, with a new cast.
The hook is a performance of obedience. Lu Mingyu (鹿鸣于) lives under the roof of her uncle's family and is mistreated there. Hong Kong outlet HK01 says she plans to escape, meets Duan Xiuming (段休冥), and realises he could be useful in her revenge, so she acts docile and draws him in. The title plays on guaiguainü (乖乖女, "good girl", the obedient daughter who does as told), and the drama is built around a heroine who wears that label as cover.
The series is still airing. Plot points here stay at the level of the opening episodes. Our news report on the premiere, Hao Yi Ge Guai Guai Nü, a horizontal remake of a hit micro-drama, premieres on Tencent Video, covers the launch facts.
The setup
HK01's summary has Lu Mingyu as the second daughter of the Lu family, confined at home since childhood and mistreated by her uncle's household. She plans to run away, and on the way meets Duan Xiuming, heir to the Duan family. She sees that he can help her take revenge, changes her plan and goes back, drawing him step by step into a scheme of her own. As they spend time together, her cold, hatred-driven interior begins to change. The TMDB synopsis is close: a seemingly sheltered heiress, hardened by years of humiliation, who teams up with a man that becomes her instrument of revenge.
Sina Entertainment (新浪娱乐) describes the heroine as gentle on the surface and vengeful underneath, and says both the vertical and the landscape versions keep that core. It also says she is made to ghostwrite paintings for her uncle, and that the story builds toward an art exhibition. The source is a novel of the same title published on the Fanqie (番茄) reading platform, per Sina.
The genre label is bai qie hei (白切黑, "white outside, black inside"), the heroine who looks mild and is anything but. Sina names it as the original's main attraction. What the series asks is whether the performance can be kept up around someone who is paying attention to her.
Cast and crew
-
Xu Mengjie (徐梦洁) as Lu Mingyu (鹿鸣于)
-
Ren Shihao (任世豪) as Duan Xiuming (段休冥)
Liu Tan (刘坦) directs. HK01 credits Li Xiang (黎响) and Hou Xiao (侯晓) as writers. The vertical original starred Ke Chun (柯淳) and Yu Yin (余茵), according to Sina and HK01.
The English title is the one TMDB uses.
From phone screen to long-form series
Sina describes the remake as stretching a show of episodes a few minutes long into a mid-length series of about 20 minutes an episode, a form the industry calls zhongju (中剧, "mid-length drama"). The Paper says it was built from the short drama and adds three storylines: a wedding, an art exhibition and an escape plan, and Sina's list of additions overlaps with it.
The two reports describe the same trade. A vertical micro-drama puts a turn in every episode and moves fast. The remake gives Lu Mingyu more inner life and gives Duan Xiuming a position and a history of his own, rather than leaving him a tool of her plan. Sina says the relationship runs from mutual use to a joint counterattack, and Sina says costume, art direction and camera work are pitched at long-drama standards.
The original's reach is the commercial reason for the remake. Chinese reports put its view count in the billions. Sina cites more than 4 billion, a platform and production figure that other reports give as lower at earlier dates, so it indicates scale and is not an audited count. Sina adds that the original's fans watching both versions side by side became part of the conversation around the remake.
Xu Mengjie and Ren Shihao
Lu Mingyu must read as docile to the people around her and calculating to the audience, and that split is the role. Sina reports that Chinese viewers compared the two actresses directly: some said Yu Yin's version shows ambition openly, while Xu Mengjie's is more "good girl" in tone.
Ren Shihao plays the man who becomes both target and ally. The remake's changes to the part, a background of his own and an inner conflict, per Sina, give the role more weight than the vertical version's love interest. The same report says the drama leans on a measured, detailed pace and that some viewers found it less tight than the micro-drama.
How it opened
Sina reports day-one heat of 19,320 on Tencent Video, passing 20,000 the next day, with first place on both Tencent's hot-drama chart and its rising chart, and more than 148,000 advance bookings. "Heat" here is Tencent's own platform index, and the numbers are reported by Sina and not independently audited. Clips of an intimate scene spread widely on short-video platforms, Sina adds.
Release schedule and episode count
The drama began at noon on October 12 with six episodes released at once. HK01 says members then get two episodes a day at noon, switching to one a day from the Sunday, and non-members get two episodes a day from October 31.
Reports differ on length. HK01 and TMDB list 29 episodes, and TMDB's episode list is consistent with HK01's schedule. Sina Entertainment reports 24 episodes of about 20 minutes. 29 is the figure used by the schedule-based sources; no official Tencent Video page settles it.
What overseas viewers are saying
English-language discussion is too thin to describe a pattern.
Where to watch
In China the drama streams on Tencent Video, and HK01 also lists Aurora TV (极光TV). TMDB lists Rakuten Viki as a streaming option, which we could not confirm. Availability varies by region, so check Tencent Video's international service and Viki in your country.
