About the drama

Flourished Peony (国色芳华, Guo Se Fang Hua, "national beauty, fragrant splendor") is a costume drama where the main drama is a business plan. Its heroine does not seek revenge or a throne. She wants to grow flowers well enough to live on them.

It premiered on January 7, 2025 on Hunan TV's Golden Eagle Theater and Mango TV, with 32 episodes in the first part. The story continued as In the Name of Blossom (锦绣芳华, Jin Xiu Fang Hua), 24 episodes from June 30, 2025, which brings the whole run to 56. It reunites Yang Zi (杨紫) and Li Xian (李现), who last starred together in Go Go Squid! (亲爱的,热爱的) in 2019.

The appeal is steady competence: two clever people, a rare flower, and a society that does not expect either of them to succeed the way they do.

He Weifang (何惟芳, Yang Zi) is a merchant's daughter with real skill at growing rare peonies. She marries Liu Chang (刘畅, Wei Zheming, 魏哲鸣) to obtain medicine for her ailing mother, but the match is cold and does not last. In Chang'an she meets Jiang Changyang (蒋长扬, Li Xian), the "Flower and Bird Envoy" (花鸟使, huaniao shi) who has a reputation as the city's most grasping official. He backs her plan to grow flowers behind his residence, and she gathers other women around her to build a shop, Hua Man Zhu (花满筑).

The partnership drives the series: business setbacks, family pressure, and a slow understanding between two people who both guard what they feel.

The series is set in the Tang dynasty (618–907), with Chang'an as its center. It is adapted from the novel Guo Se Fang Hua by Yi Qianzhong (意千重), first published in 2011. Screenwriter Zhang Yuanang (张鸢盎) changed a good deal: the heroine's marriage is motivated by her mother's illness, and Jiang Changyang becomes a flower and bird envoy rather than the novel's imperial strategist.

Huace produced the series with Hunan TV. At the 30th Shanghai Television Festival it won Best Art Direction and Yang Zi was nominated for Best Actress, and it won the Flying Apsaras Award (飞天奖) for outstanding TV series at the 35th China TV Drama Awards.
